I read a while ago that Kristin Chenoweth will be at the Met starring in The Ghosts of Versailles March 2010. Does anyone know any more info. about this? How long it would run?
I'm planning a trip around this. :)
yeah i heard that too
Performances at the MET do not "run". There is usually a four to six week period in which the opera enters the repertoire, performed one or two times a week during that period. No way of knowing dates on this until next April when the 2009-2010 season will be sent out to subscribers.

I much care for The Ghosts of Versailles. It doesn't focus enough on La Mere Coupable for my liking. :/
Let's hope that Lonny Price doesn't direct
Lonny Price only directs cameras for filming. The Mets own house directors direct their opera productions.
EXAMPLE: the film/tape of John Doyle's recent revival of COMPANY was directed by John Doyle -- Lonny Price only directed the cameras for the filming.
I just went back and checked the MET Opera press releases and it says the opera is scheduled to be presented in March 2010. But that might change so don't make any travel plans till next spring when you see it in final planning! I am intrigued by the fact that the part of Samira that Chenoweth is singing was previously sung by Marilyn Horne, a mezzo.

Yeah I thought it a bit odd that Chenoweth, a coloratura soprano, would be playing a mezzo role. But I have heard that Corigliano is rewriting the part to fit her voice. So Samira's aria may be totally different than when Horne did it.
Queen of the Night, I heard that they're changing the song to fit Kristin's voice too
I work at the Met, if I find out anything, I'll let you guys know. But specific scheduling for 09-10 probably won't actually be done until January. The subscription renewal deadline for 08-09 was only three weeks ago so there is a bit of time yet to go.

frogs, you work at the Met? How cool is that! I love opera (as my name suggests--huge Zauberflote fan) You are so lucky to work at such a cool place! My husband and I did the backstage tour when we came there last year. It was fascinating.
Insertclevernamehere, you know when I first Chenoweth was going to do this opera, I figured she'd play either Florestine (the high soprano role written for the Canadian coloratura Tracy Dahl) or Renee Fleming's and Hei-Kyung Hong's former role of Rosina. I was very surprised that Kristin was going to do Samira. But we shall see what they do with it. i like the opera so I'll be looking forward to hearing her in it.

I saw the TV broadcast in (?) 1992, so I don't have any strong recollection of any of it.
And, frogs - thank the powers that be for bringing back THAIS - one of my favorite operas of all time.
Queen of the Night, I thought the same thing. But I've only recently started seriously listening to opera (in the last year or so, since I started singing it) so I just assumed I mixed up the names. It does seem odd for them to change the character's vocal range for Chenoweth when there is already a part that suits her voice, but as you said, we will just have to wait and see.

I thought she was going to play Marie Antoinette's ghost, myself.
I hate when they adapt mezzo roles for sopranos. Sopranos have enough good roles without having to steal from mezzos, who have slim pickings.
But they are giving Orfeo back to a mezzo - must be a shortage of counter tenors.

I agree heartily!!!
And MA's ghost would be a good part for her, hope it happens for her...:I
BUMPing from beyond the grave
Did this go kaput? Or just postponed till next season?
I believe the production was cancelled altogether, but I'm not entirely sure on that.
I recall reading somewhere that due to The Met having economic problems due to the economy, that they canceled this production.
I think I remember Kristin said it was cancelled at her talk/book signing at the Paley Center for Media last April.
bummer!! I remember hearing about this before I moved to New York and being so excited that I'd be able to go see her because I hoped to be living in the city by then. oh well, at least she'll be around in Promises Promises
wasn't that an opera that was being written specifically for her?
This production was scrapped long ago due for budgetary reasons. It requires a large cast and was too expensive to produce. They were reviving it for Angela Gheorghiu and are now doing "La Traviata" instead. The opera premeired back in 1991. The role Chenoweth was to sing was written for Marilyn Horne and Corigliano was rewriting the role for her. There are no plans for a revival in the near future.
For anyone who is interested, the Met's 10-11 season is going to be officially announced on February 22nd.
