Chlydomnestra... sorry I just don't think someone (Pat R) should be given a public platform to make hate filled homophobic statements... call me crazy. For some reason people are willing to downplay homophobia... it is the last accepted prejudice. Anyway we have all had this conversastion before, no need to go there again.

Oh Chlydo--there are so many things wrong with your earlier statement, the head spins. But i don't have the energy right now.

And she was supposed to launch her cd and he wouldn't let her talk about it until like, her last 2 minutes. I love Kristin Chenoweth and have since I bought the YAGMCB cd. I will always love her and her talent.

Posted: 4/27/05 at 5:54pmChlydomnestra, technically you're right. Pat Robertson has a right to his opinion, as we all do. But will I ever accept his opinion? No way! I know it's garbage. The only people I'm prejudiced against are people who are prejudiced.

Of course he has the right. However, I don't agree that if 'you preach love and acceptance' you have to 'extend the courtesy to him.' No matter how loving and accepting someone (or a certain faith)is, virulent hatred should not be extended ANY courtesy.

Exactly!
Freedom of speech is one thing but Freedom implies two things
a) the responsibility to tell the truth...
b) the reponsibility not to hurt anyone by exercizing your freedom
Victor Hugo said 'the only thing you should not tolerate is intolerance' and Robertson and his kind benefits way too much from the tolerance of others when themselves have none.

I have to agree with Chly, wholeheartedly. As Christians, we are called to follow one who would show Pat Robertson the same love and acceptance that he would have shown to his disciples, to lesbians and gays and, yes, even to the ones who crucified him.

That's all I was trying to say. I don't agree with him, and I don't like it, I don't think it's right...but he's got a right to say it. The man does not have it all right in his head and seems to have no tolerance.
Of course, to me, not necessarily on this board, because everyone has been really respectful to me, but in the media and other entertainment forums, I feel there is an acceptable bias and prejudice towards Christians. It's okay to make Christians sound irrational, weak, fanatical, weird, judgemenatal, anti-human right, etc on television; however, you let any network show refer to a Buddist, Jewish, Atheist, Muslim, etc as any of a number of stereoypes(which I will not name) and there would be such an uproar and backlash that the network would inevitably end up making a public apology. Why is it okay to treat Christianity this way? If you want examples, please PM me, because I've got em'

Sometimes people forget what the First Amendment really states:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
This means that the GOVERNMENT must never make a law that limits individual citizens' right to free speech, as well as religion. Not me. Not you. The government.
Of course, it's lovely to want to extend ourselves to allow for differences of opinion and the free expression thereof. HOWEVER, there comes a time when people (either as individuals or together) should stand and say 'This is wrong. This kind of speech, when turned into political action, actually infringes on a segment of the population's rights as Americans.'
I'm not a practicing Christian. But I went to Catholic school and still remember the story of the merchants in the temple. Now...did Jesus say, 'Look guys, I disagree with what you're doing, but hey, you have the right...' No...he verbally kicked ass. And, depending on which film version you see, the man overturned some tables!
Some things ya just have to fight long, hard and loud for. Even the Big Guy did it.

You know why Christianity is different? Because in this country, Christianity is the default. It shows up culturally and legally and it shows up everywhere. Any other faith has to carve out its little bits of accomodation from that default mode. I know that's hard to notice when you are Christian, but when you're born of another faith, you notice these things. Blue laws, bible taught as literature, "under God" and "In God We Trust." You're surrounded by this and you don't even realize it. Don't give me that "Christians are the most persecuted" argument. I've had huge screaming (well, so to speak) arguments with people here in defense of Christians in general, but I won't listen to that self-pitying pap coming from a member of such an overwhelming majority.

The "Big Guy" also said:
"But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you"
I don't see much of that going on.

He also sent a flood to wipe out all of humanity save 8 people and a whole lotta animals.
I'd say, like most fathers, he sends mixed messages.

Exactly robbiej. I prefer honesty. Gotham's lovely sentiment has been corrupted since time memoriam. Pat Robertson 'loves' me, and will continue to 'love' me even as he prays for my rehabilitation. So his 'love' is in reality a lie--isn't that breaking a commandment? We could argue this for a LONG time.

"So his love is actually a lie--isn't that breaking a commandment?"
If you believe that Pat Robertson is wrong, then Jesus has commanded you to love, bless and pray for him.

An Avenue Q song states 'Everyone's a little racist sometimes.' I remember the theater erupted in laughter and nodding heads.
I prefer honesty over a flawed document which states to 'love everyone', when history has shown that to be impossible and unrealistic, with grave consequences. Only with honesty can you make progress--not some vague notion of 'love.'

Why isn't Pat Robertson called upon to bless US?
Why is it only WE who are called upon to bless HIM?
Can Chly or Goth answer that?
Why does Pat Robertson get a free pass while we get lectures? Why doesn't he get the lecture?

Posted: 4/27/05 at 9:27pmWhile I am not a huge fan - though I do admire her voice - I think Cheno deserves every bit of her success. Judging by her close ups on the PBS CANDIDE, she's no spring chicken, she's worked long and hard to get where she is and she should maximize her "moment" while she can.

Actually Midtown, the commandment is "thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." It's a little bit different than a lie.
PalJoey, Pat Robertson is called to bless us, but he doesn't.

I agree, I am getting confused too! If we're going to discuss Robertson, let's move it to the "Off-Topic" Board, because that guy is "waaaaaay" off! I have always liked KC and think she has a wonderful voice, but I am finding it a bit hard to believe that she is really as "naive" as she pretends-especially after watching the Letterman segment. That being said, I live with a person who is so "apolitical" that she can barely suffer through the evening news, so I will thus shut up and eagerly wait to queu up for tickets to Kristin's next project!

I just wanted to say really quickly that... I've never heard of this Pat guy before... and I'm not totally naive but just haven't tuned into those "Christian" (please regard the quotation marks) shows... so I just wanted to stick up for KC bc I think that it's definitely possible to be a Christian and not know who this guy is...
And also, I think she is fabulous for admitting that it was a mistake.
