Just a thought:
Could the Tony voters have put either actress in the Featured Actress category to ensure that both actresses could have won... ? Maybe. Not necessarily about these actresses but even about the roles - can one of the witches be considered featured/supporting?

Yes but both actresses considered there witch leading, Elphaba is without a doubt, one could make a good case for Glinda being supporting but Chenoweth and producers decided on leading so...
Elphaba is without a doubt the leading character in the show. And as said above, you can make a case that Glinda is too, but if it were anyone else originating Glinda it would have been put Featured.
I don't really see how Glinda could be considered anything but a leading role. She has a few solos and is in the majority of the songs. The producers of Wicked could have suggested anything they want but the Tony Committee ultimately rules on what roles fall into what category. I can't imagine them letting Glinda be a featured role even if the producers wanted it.
So... to thrive in the theorhetical for a moment...
Do we think Kristin would have gotten her second featured actress Tony had she been in that catagory (Beating out Anika Noni Rose as Emmie in 'Caroline')....
Idina's Tony was the only consolation prize for all the awards Wicked was expecting to get, and saw none of.
Even though she's a large part of the story, I've always thought of Galinda as supporting. The story isnt about her; its about Elphaba and her transformation.
But Galinda getting the majority of the songs... well, I would posit that this isnt the only case where the lead didnt get the bulk of the score. Look at PASSION. I havent played the album in years, but as memory serves, she doesnt get a whole lot compared to the other characters in the show. (I could be wrong on that point, so feel free to correct; I'm going on distant memory of seeing it on Broadway.) Nevertheless it's pretty clear who's the lead and who's not... and I would suggest that, as much as this is a story about friendship, WICKED is really about the woman who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West and the forces that pushed her there.

if the billing is above the title of the show just as the actresses who play galinda and elphaba are in the playbill...then they are both considered leading characters
As much as it is Elphaba's story it is just as equally Glinda's. If this was truer to the book Glinda would deff be supporting as she is not as prominent in the book.

Producers can petition for a performer to be considered on a different category. Just like I can petition the use of capital letters.
No, please, Jordan. I'm dying to hear what you have to say.
Look in any Caroline, Or Change thread. I'm sure my thoughts in detail are there.

I wish the producers would've put them both in featured so the rightful owner of that award would have it. Jordan (in the other threads, presumably) is right.
I think the award went to the proper owner...of course, that's an opinion...not fact.

2004 was a VERY tough year for that category. Any of the women nominated could have won, and would have done so deservingly. The award definitely went to my favorite performer that year, but again, all of the women deserved to win that year. I think the only one who probably didn't necessarily deserve the award was Stephanie, and that was mainly due to the part, not the actress. I think the two most deserving roles that year were Caroline and Elphaba, undoubtedly.
^I agree that all of them are extremely deserving. For me, Idina deserved it. But to others, she didn't. I just don't like it when people act as if its 100% FACT that Idina did not deserve it.
