re: 'LA CAGE' to play The Playhouse

I'm VERY excited for this transfer. I most likely won't be able to see it, but I hope it finds it's audience again! A wonderful show, filled with top-notch actors!

Besides Mr Hodge is there anyone from the original cast still in this transfer or have they started from scratch?

Denis Lawsons West End musical debut.
Ran at the Fortune Theatre from July 1983. Great CD

A young actress with Noel coward after a dreadful opening night performance said to him 'Well, i knew my lines backwards this morning!'' Noels fast reply was ''Yes dear, and thats exactly how you said them tonight'!'

Word is is that it will be largely a new cast for this season!

Denis was also in the Half Moon revival of Pal Joey with Sian Phillips that transferred to the Albery in 1980, with its deliberately and hilariously awful chorus line.

A great production that had Sian Phillips in fine form. A great CD. The Half Moon sent a few great shows into town in the 80s. A great venue sadly missed on the Mile End Rd.

re: 'LA CAGE' to play The Playhouse

I absolutely adored this show at the Menier but I think that the Playhouse will kill it. Also, it won't be the same without Quast and Una Stubbs...I thoroughly deserved a transfer but a much better theatre.

I really hope we get a cast recording out of this. I love the original cast, but I'd very much like to hear a more complete recording with today's better sound quality.

re: 'LA CAGE' to play The Playhouse

As much as i love the 'old' cast recordings I don't think 'La Cgae' is that good a recording listening to it today. it needs a new recording- lets hope London is the one!

Has the cast been announced? Along with the two already said, Stuart Neal will be playing Jean-Michel. =)

re: 'LA CAGE' to play The Playhouse

I have never seen the show and really know nothing about this except the little I read, I understand there is a song called 'I am what I am', which sounds like it will be a great song and I guess is the biggest number in the show?

Wickedboy2, sorry I can't resist this, the Australian production opened at Her Majesty's Theatre Sydney 1,500 seats in 1984 ( a full two years before London).

What is the set design like for this production?

re: 'LA CAGE' to play The Playhouse

The London Palladium had the set and costumes from the 1st US National Tour.
These I believe were mixed with sets and costumes from the Australian production.

re: 'LA CAGE' to play The Playhouse

The arrival of The London Palladium production was and still is regarded as one of the worst timed openings in recent memory.
It had been playing on Broadway almost 3 years prior to London.
The show opened in the middle of the media scare about the AIDS epidemic that was hitting the world. The show in London was branded 'The AIDS Musical' and never took off due to luke warm reviews with audiences just not booking and it plodded along for 8 months. I saw the show about 8 or 9 times and to sit in that theatre and see such a spectacular show being played to around 300 or 400 a night was heartbreaking and the whole building seemed to have a dark shadow over it.
London had a brilliant cast with George Hern from Broadway, the wonderful Dennis Quilley and a then very young Jonathan Morris!

re: 'LA CAGE' to play The Playhouse

I remember it well- especially the wild, raucous last night!

And don't forget Phyllida Lloyd as Jacqueline and Brian Glover and the wonderful bigoted bufoon father of Anne.

A stellar cast.

re: 'LA CAGE' to play The Playhouse

I seem to remember announcing this a few weeks back.
The rain we knew is a thing of the past -
deep-delving, dark, deliberate you would say
browsing on spire and bogland; but today
our sky-blue slates are steaming in the sun,
our yachts tinkling and dancing in the bay
like racehorses. We contemplate at last
shining windows, a future forbidden to no one.

A few weeks ago, even a few months ago it was rumored to move to The Playhouse. At that time the theatre had a show up and running. This production was put on the shelf until just last week!

re: 'LA CAGE' to play The Playhouse

The whole AIDS scenario with the show happenned here too. It ran (between Sydney and Melbourne) about seven months. I recall being told that at one point things got so bad during the Sydney season one night they played to an audience of just 26. Both Van Johnson and Rock Hudson were rumoured to play Georges for the Melbourne season (taking over from the capable but never great box office name of Keith Michell), it never happened.

Arthur Laurents offered Geraldene Morrow and David Ravenswood the opportunity to repeat their roles of Edouard and Marie Dindon in London but they both declined. He thought them the best they had ever had in the show.

I agree Scripps, the Menier artwork was fab! It gave a real burst of colour and excitement, the same cant be said (in my opinion) for the new artwork. Im not a fan of it!
