Posted: 2/6/06 at 10:21amI'm always thrilled to see Ms. Minnelli. Unfortunately, Mr. Lipton has veered away from substantive chat about the actor's profession in the past several seasons and there was little specificity about Liza's actual work. No mention of Charlie Bubbles, Chicago or The Act. The segment on "Improv" was odd at best. Liza mentioned using improv throughout the filming of New York, New York, but never delved into how it was used.

I loved Liza in the beginning. I saw her as a kid in "The Fantasticks", "Carnival" , "Pajama Game" and "Flora". I thought she was wonderful on stage and a talent to be reckoned with. Then it happened. After having seen her in nightclubs and concerts, I remember one night in 1984 seeing her at the Universal Amphitheatre. I recall as I was applauding her at curtain call that this was the last time I'd be seeing Liza live. Why? Because as much as I enjoyed her over the years, I HAD SEEN HER ACT. Nothing new anymore for me. Predictable. Boring. No surprises. The forced laugh grating on me. Yes, I still have a warm place in my heart for Liza and will always be grateful for the joy she brought me over the years but alas I'm no longer the fan I once was. I think the last straw for me was her marriage to Gest. As her sister Lorna, who did not attend the wedding, said at the time, "My sister was once a respected performer...she now has become a circus act. Sad but true.

With all the talk about her throwing punches on vodka I'd pay to see her box, They say she can really throw a good punch! I agree with what Demitri2 said and Lorna's quote. Liza is now an older woman who get's up in her "Liza Drag" and does the "Act", Some love it but for those of us who saw her (LIVE) and loved the true talent in it's day - the mock is sad - I hate to watch anyone's sun set. Hey, How about Liza playing "Norma" - but we all know she couldn't pull of the schedule. I still adore films, events and things from the old days but honestly, the last time I saw the old Liza I fell in love with must have been at the tribute to Freddie Mercury at Wimbley whhen she took the stage and sang "We are the Champions" (And she was INCREDIBLE!).
I think that was the last I saw her. I did get my hopes up when she did the Michael Jackson Tribute but we all know that is when Gest took over and the rest is "Her-Story". Sorry to all the dyed in the wool fans, Just my opinion.
"Liza's Back" was, I think, Perhaps a noble attempt, that failed.

Posted: 2/6/06 at 2:12pmLorna is one to talk. With her creepy show based entirely on her mothers act. ( Pal Joey.. I know.. I know..) Liza is older and def not what she was. But she is still a great live performer. Saw her last year and her show was in no way a "Liza Drag."

Well, each of us have our own Liza agenda.
It's true that fomer fans are worse than any critics.
No one forgives disappointment? How dares she still to perform after she had passed her prime, why not to die or to hide far away in order to let her old fans to cherish their memoires...
Slightly selfish point of view for my taste.
I can't understand why someone thinks that after 1984 Liza didn't try anything new.in 1987 was "Carnegy Hall" brilliant show, then "Results" great fun and completly new material (and she had tried to break her Liza's image quite few times in "Time to live" "Results" "Rink" "WestSide Waltz",sadly public wasn't very interested)
then "Radio City","Gently" -slightly boring but still good,"MOM"-(I know, know, but I saw it on good night,so it was worth it for me" "Liza's back" was so-so in NY but better on the road.
She was very good at the "Westbury" last year, really good, sadly no new material,it's true, but public already forgot most of her songs from the past so the show worked.
Her latest tour didn't gain one single negative review. Are all those people who saw her lately -crazy Minnelli-Garland fans?
Or they are unable to understand how badly Liza declined?I don't think so.Maybe the problem is inside of fomer fans, which
got used to know too well all Liza's songs, little tricks, moves and facial expession.Sure it's sad and boring to look at someone you know almost as good as youself and notice how she has aged and doesn't do her old tricks as good as she used to,but most people in the audience are not counting small flaws that only long time fans are able to notice, they enjoying good show and great performance.Today she is still very good live performer, energetic and exciting, sadly it will not last long...
Why not to be grateful that she is still here and performing, there are not too many performer of her caliber left.

I still think she's spectacular. I said this on another thread (I hope. If it was on this one, sorry for repeating myself) that she always comes off as so warm and likeable.
That's my Liza agenda.

I to those people if you want Liza in the CABARET movie only. Then dammit put it in your cd/dvd/ipod and press repeat and let the rest of enjoy the fact that she has grown, and changed..and developed into one hell of lady.
