I was taught not to look at these sort of things........

That's a good point! Wouldn't a grown man feel a little uncomfortable seeing a 14 year old trying to do the Gypsy trip, and having three 13-15 year olds as the 3 strippers?

Thanks, I want too see grown women play those parts, not pre pubescent girls.

Well, i did a production of it in May, with kids 15-16, (baby june/louise were around 7/8 along with all the other kids in the beginning). it was amazing. our rose was 15, and she was outstanding. we had all the songs... the only thing we had to change was the stripper costumes, and louise's strip. tessie's costume was a long gown, with the wings and everything. electra was a short dress with all the lights, and mazeppa had a long dress as well. for my strip (as louise) i wore this pink dress that had a zipper down the front. for the actual strip i was behind this scrim, so you could only see my shadow, where i removed the dress. it was really funny, i thought, but really effective. everyone was really surprised how good it was.
and as for "kids cannot play mothers", i completely disagree. teens and younger play them everyday. not all high school productions are "grease", and "dear edwina". so get used to it.

I'm sorry - But I would never want to see a children's production of Gypsy.

There's a huge difference between 13 and fifteen. 13 is just...no.

"stripping was alot different then, then it is now it's basically like girls acting sexy"

Sorry, grammar geek in me. Then, Then??? AND a run on sentence?! Apparently she is still 13.

It was probably a school play, so wtf do you want them to do? Hire a 50 year old woman? You people really need help . . .

SIMPLE. DON'T DO AN ADULT SHOW WITH A SCHOOL

IT'S F*CKING RIDICULOUS AND I'M TIRED OF IT. High School directors think they can get away doing CABARET, CHICAGO, GYPSY, etc and I get very mad.

NO ONE wants to see a 14 year old playing a stripper, who the hell would want to see that?

ljay-I agree with you that schools should not do Gypsy-but arent about 99% of shows out there written for adults? What shows are high schools expected to do then?

On a side note-this theater group I am a part of wanted to do Gypsy this year, and they would not listen to me that no 16 or 17 year old girl can handle the part of Mama Rose. Hell even Ethel Merman, a legend for never missing shows and giving spot on performances every night, could barely handle it. The reason we ended up not doing it was because there wasn't a lot for the chorus to do. People are stupid sometimes
