Mr. Tuttle, you can only post your feelings about a show if they're positive... if you have something negative to say about a show then you better have 1) starred in, 2) directed, 3) produced, 4)written or 5)conducted SOMEthing on Broadway, otherwise you'll suffer the wrath of a poster named "used to dance" (ustadance)... oh, wait, she only posts on Brooklyn threads...

This is a 180 from the early gushing of those who attended the first handful of previews. My question: Does the show have more resonance in Bush era America? The love between these men -- tame stuff in the early 80s, let alone post Will and Grace - now represents one of the nation's "threats" to the "values-obsessed" folks who are keeping the intolerant cowboy in DC. Does the show feel any more subversive ... at all?

With the conservative backlash it seems like an ideal opportunity to have a flamboyantly funny show ... instead we get "stale" and "flat"...too bad

Feels so good to see that most people here are taking seriously a long review of a show, instead of just accepting the good (one to two sentence) word on it from a [normally] more trusted source. :)

Isn't this the show that Roy Cohn references in Angels in America? Everytime I read that line in the play, I keep wondering what was "so bad" about La Cage (as if mentioning it as a joke necessarily means that it's bad).

Like many shows, people seem to REALLY love it, or REALLY loathe it, and I have been struck by the number of very articulate opinions on both boards, both pro and con. I exchanged a few Emails with a friend who saw it and his response was this:

"I was blown away at the performance. There are problems but remember it's still in previews. I missed George Hearn's voice but not the performance. Gary Beach was much more comfortable as Zaza then I remember Hearn to be and I saw it at least 10 times. The cast was (is) very energetic, fun, colorfull, great dancing and good hummable music, great costumes.. what else do you want? I loved it, cried, laughed, maybe it was the company but the audience was just wild the show was stopped three times, yes three times. Would love to tell you more but tired and must go to bed."

After I asked him if Albin was still a wuss:

"the second act seems to fall little flat after the opening number the best of times......

it becomes a little serious trying to prove a point it is unnecessary, it loses it's momentum. Albin unfortunately remains the same, but he seems to overcome the
dulldrum of the persona. I liked him a lot more than any other performers that I've seen in the role. He's comfortable and makes no excused and it comes through much more sincere than originally written a credit to Beach, by the way he's much more
agile than any other Albin................."

Oh..and forgot the BIG mistake of the show...

Remember how powerful it was at the end of "I Am What I Am"..how he would take off the wig and storm out of the threater going up through the audience? A true goose-bump producing moment.

Gary Beach walks off stage and then cut accross and exits out a side door...WHAT THE HELL?? Is the walk up the isle too much energy for him? What a powerful statement the original made as he made a triumphant walk out. Here, he starts out proud and then says.."mmmm...sorry..gootaa go".

I expect Jerry Zachs to change this immediately.

No..just kidding. Why change perfection? Maybe he'll add a plant?

But the fact that he walks OUT of the theater going AWAY from the action is more powerful than him starting down, making a turn and going through the stage door. I looks like he's going to do a costume change.

I saw this tonight and was really looking forward to it and must say, Mr. Tuttle, you pretty much sumed it up. Althought I think I kinda liked it better than you did.

I was dissapointed..the jokes fell flat. They felt dated. The two leads give their all but I find their performances racking in depth and honesty. I actually liked Daniel Davis better than Beach. But he isn't a singer and that hurts the show. I admire Beach but don't think this is the best role for him. Ruth Williamson stole the show! What a legend and she knows how to give a performance.

The chorus is the best thing about this show. The guys/girls are amazing. I thought the choreogeaphy was decent but over done in some aspects..it didn't need it. The pacing was slow in Act 2 and got boring. I like Little Shop but thought Zacks didn't do a good job here. And now that I've read both sides to the "I AM What I Am" song, I have to say that I would rather see him storm up the asile and out of the theater. The current is not as effective or powerfull.

I've three shows recently: Beauty and the Beast, Producers and La Cage. I would rank La Cage last. I would give it a C grade overall. Dissapointed as I thought this would be the highlight of my trip.
