re: La CRAP Aux Flops

I'm pleased to see that a couple of the most revolting posts I have ever seen here have been removed. CurtainUp2 is indeed a child. However, seeing the narrow minds present by some of the posters on this thread, I'm not suprised. If my friends see a show and tell me what they think, I have every right to report it as does anyone other member.

It's someone's review..it's someone's opinion. They have all the right to say what they feel. Immature interjections just prove how immature you are.

re: La CRAP Aux Flops

It's not in good taste to post reviews that are catty and nasty. You are certainly allowed to post a dissenting opinion of a show--but you can do it with tact. It's called respect.

And, it is also in poor taste to post a negative review during previews. Clearly, some people do not understand the creative process or simply do not have respect for artists in general.

re: La CRAP Aux Flops

jrb, I agree with you on the catty and nasty point. It seems that some people can't just offer constructive criticism and say that they did not enjoy the show without trying to show how clever they are by being as nasty as possible. A lot of people want to be, or think that they are, John Simon.

Everyone is entitled to express their opinion and I would be the last person to discourage anyone from saying what they think. Some people just don't like the way that other people choose to do it.

I don't have a problem with people posting negative reviews during previews since preview audiences have to pay for tickets as well. I would hope that people who read these reviews however, would know that it is in fact a preview and would understand that it means that it's a work in progress that they are seeing. Many things can change before opening night. For example, the replacement of a leading player, as was the case in "The Frogs". I assume that the majority of the people who post on this board would understand that.

I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts (both positive and negative) on how the previews are going but I won't base my decision on going to see a show on what people, who have only seen previews of that show, have had to say.

I will not allow myself to be disuaded or influenced in any way by no-talent, dried up, old, biter, wannabe, has-beens with nothing better to do than to criticize and pick apart other people's hard work. But just for the record, my post (which has since been deleted) was not in response to anyone's critique of the show. It was in direct response to a comment that was made specifically to and about me. If you don't like being f*cked with, then don't f*ck with me!

re: La CRAP Aux Flops

jrb--I'm not sure that I can agree with you about an embargo on negative comments during previews. I certainly don't think that a negative comment during previews represents a "lack of respect" for artists or the creative process. Indeed, isn't thoughtful criticism during previews the very point of having previews? If a person is going to choose not to see a show solely because of negative comments on a chat room thread what does it matter if the comment is posted during previews or during the regular run?

I will say that I saw Pacific Overtures this week and chose not to make any comments yet as many of my criticisms relate to flaws that will likely dissipate with more performance time, but I think that during previews is a perfectly legitimate time to identify a weak performance or a poorly conceived idea. No?

re: La CRAP Aux Flops

I do not understand this notion that it is a bad thing to "pick apart other people's hard work." Anytime someone puts forth their hard work for public viewing, they should be prepared for some criticism. To not expect it would be immature. Funny how the pros let it roll off their back, but posters on here (who call others wannabes) get all out of joint about criticism of their favorite shows...now that's unprofessional and a sure sign of somebody who's gonna have hard time making it..

re: La CRAP Aux Flops

bta--you make some very smart points.

More than anything it's the nastiness and cattiness that is unneeded. Some people just thrive on that I guess. It's actually pretty sad.

ma--my point is that criticism does not equal cattiness and nastiness. That's why I spat with Tut.

And there are posters on this board who can tell you that everything we say on this board gets back to the people. And it HAS hurt some feelings.

Not cool.

I agree with you JRB..those comments were not directed to you.I still do not think that the original post on this thread was particularly catty or nasty..

Hurt feeling are not cool, but if a person has a hard time accepting criticsm, perhaps being in show business is not the best option for him.

Tuttle, don't sweat it. Posters who immediately go for the kill by attacking the person with the dissenting opinion (rather than the dissenting opinion itself) are probably just incapable of coming up with their own insights. And unless they somehow contributed to the production aside from funding it through ticket purchases, it's a real curiosity that they're so devastated when someone doesn't like one of their favorite works. The wonderful thing is that there are so many theater message boards with threads going on about La Cage that it's quite a vain effort for anyone here to try to silence the naysayers.

(and I say this from the objective perspective of someone who knows nothing about the show aside from the Angels in America reference)

re: La CRAP Aux Flops

Evelyn, you are so right. After surviving all those insipid BKLYN posts, here we have someone posting an intelligent, well-thought review of their opinion.

And who attacks them? People who have not even seen the show. People who just want to start trouble for the sake of making trouble. It's sick. They're criticizing someone who has actually seen the show and offers their opinion..and they haven't seen it themselves nor do they offer any comments of value. Posts like CurtainUp and jrb have added nothing to this discussion. I appreciate those who have actually somehting of value to say and always will.

re: La CRAP Aux Flops

My original post: (note that I am not directing my comments to anyone imparticular. I'm making a general statement.)

It's going to be a big, fat, fabulous hit! The hottest ticket on Broadway! And it doesn't surprise me at all that such an incredible show would be getting a certain amount of negative reaction, especially on this board. Hard as it may be to believe, I have a sneaking suspicion that more than a few folk around here have ulterior motives for wanting a show to fail or succeed. Imagine that.

Mr. Tuttles response (specifically directed at me):

Yes..curtainup...EVERYONE who doesn't like them show has ulterior motives. We are all pissed about SITPWG..martini swigging gay guys...and BKLYN.

You are so smart and wise. You saw through our little plan for musical domination.

Get real

I'll say it again. If you don't want me to f*#k with you, don't f*#k with me! And if you can't take it, then you best not dish it out.

re: La CRAP Aux Flops

My dear curtain...your implication is that no one could dislike the show unless they had ulterior motives. No opinion is valid except yours...all others have some part in a big conspiracy..Nevermind the fact that I have a read a number of similar reviews.

It really does sound ridiculous..because it is.

re: La CRAP Aux Flops

". No opinion is valid except yours...all others have some part in a big conspiracy.."

This is a sentiment that many posters on this board seem to share. Matt_G's responses on the Finding Neverland, Ray and Rent threads are no exception. I would like to see him and others offer a detailed review of shows they like and dislike for once, rather than attempt to close arguments by (more or less) saying, "It's a fabulous show and anyone who doesn't like it must [be a bitch, have been sitting in the wrong seat, insert other presumptions here]."

re: La CRAP Aux Flops

No Ma. That's not what I said or was trying to imply. This is...

"I have a sneaking suspicion that more than a few folk around here have ulterior motives for wanting a show to fail or succeed. Imagine that."

That does not imply that "no one could dislike the show unless they had ulterior motives", nor, as Tutts states in his response, that "EVERYONE who doesn't like the show has ulterior motives". What I said is that I suspect there a MORE THAN A FEW people around here who have ulterior motives for wanting a show to FAIL OR SUCCEED. The fact that I stated "fail or succeed" indicates that I was not solely referring to La Cage or to this thread, but was making a general statement about the possible motives some people might have in posting a postive or negative review of a show. I take raves (i.e. BKLYN, Wicked, etc.) with as few grains of salt as I take pans (i.e. Dracula, La Cage, etc.) That, to clarify for you, is what I was saying. As for my opinion that La Cage is going to be a big, fat, fabulous hit; that's a hunch based on the two previews I attended, my enjoyment of it, the audience reaction at both shows, and intuition based on forty plus years of theatre-going. In no way did I imply that my opinion was worth any more (or less) than anyone else's. I'm sorry you misinterpreted my comments.

re: La CRAP Aux Flops

Good! It seems that more often, he's posting a one or two sentence response attacking a particular poster or idea. But after looking at the review -- I've got to say that it's really a "review" in the denotative sense of the word (i.e. listing the cast members and saying that everything was "great"). I would like to see him and others who are so often very brief and cutting in their responses go into detail about particular moments in a show, what made a cast member so "fabulous" or awful, etc. Perhaps it's true that the people in question post detailed reviews regularly and I miss them, but it's hard to find the comprehensive analysis (if there is any) amongst all the vitriol about other members.

re: La CRAP Aux Flops

I actually enjoyed Matt G's review of the show. It was posted a few postings back. It was a nice contrast to Mr T's review. Both reviews, while differing, offered substance . . . not name calling or references to conspiracy or the unkindness of criticsm.

And curtain, I was not trying to quote you...thus the word "implication." And I believe your subsequent postings revealed that's exactly what you meant. Like the show, love it, praise it, but offer something a little more substantial than "it's fabulous" with no explanation before you dismiss other people's opinion as unworthy.

re: La CRAP Aux Flops

My qualm is the lack of consistency. It's not okay to offer a serious, respectful view sometimes, and then cut to the chase with "you're a bitch," "your opinion doesn't count," or something else to that effect other times. Consistency is the way to go.

re: La CRAP Aux Flops

Sorry Evelyn, but the last time I checked, I was under no obligation that I know of to play by your rules and your rules alone. I'm also not under any obligation to give an in depth review of every show that I see. If, and when, I'm in the mood to, then fine, I will. If I'm not in the mood, or I don't have the time, then I won't. Frankly, there are a few too many people who have an exagrerated sense of self-importance and feel that the world can't live without hearing what they've got to say about everything and anything. I, for one, can live without the amateur, blow by blow, song by song, scene by scene, reaccountments of shows, that pass for reviews, by people with little or no talent of their own. I also can live without snide and bitchy thread titles like "La CRAP aux folles", especially when a show has just started previews and is still being fine-tuned and undergoing changes. But, the bottom line is, if you don't find unsubstantiated statements like "it's going to be a big, fat, fabulous hit", of any help or interest, then feel free to ignore them. But, if that's all I feel like saying or sharing, then that's exactly what I'll do.
