Definitely go see RENT. Then when you return home, rent (pun intended) THE BIRDCAGE.

See Rent. Even seeing it with a bad cast is better then not seeing it at all. It really is a great show.

Once again - THE CAGELLES and their dancing are simply show stopping! Go for La Cage. I need not comment AGAIN about the current state of RENT.

There is no doubt I will see RENT ~ it's just a matter of time. Especially since someone promised to take me. re: La Cage Vs Rent I most def want to see it before the movie comes out. But I see rent as one of those catch at the spare of the moment shows just because you're in the city and looking for something to do.

When you say old fashion musicals do you mean musicals like Oklahoma and Hello Dolly?

La Cage has the more traditional book musical construction and musical theatre 'sound' whereas RENT is nearly sung through and complete pop-rock with a musical theatre influence.

I would go see La Cage...I love both, but La Cage is just my personal favorite...and chances are it wont be on broadway for that much longer, maybe just through the summer so...I loved it!

Yay! I love La Cage... I went and had a glorious time. "Once again - THE CAGELLES and their dancing are simply show stopping!" I know... The theater is very fun too (with the fancy tube-elevators). And they let you eat there- we had a picnic. {in the lobby} It's a fun show... and the music is really pretty. Plus Niles from the Nanny is in it :) I hope you like it

Both shows are tons of fun, and VERY different.

Personally, as bg2 said, I think RENT has been getting much sloppier, but there ARE the people who keep it fresh (see my icon...).

BUT RENT is one of my favorite shows, and La Cage is not. So if you don't know the story of RENT, go see it!

EDIT- another RENT cast member who ALWAYS gives her all- mayumi ando.

i'd wait for the RENT movie w/ the OBC. LA CAGE is simply brilliant!! i'm going this weekend myself. but, "niles" from the nany is no longer in the show he was fired. legend Robert Goulet has taken over the role. "I AM WHAT I AM" has become my theme song. LA CAGE is the one to see.

"but, "niles" from the nany is no longer in the show he was fired"
How scandalous! That saddens me. I thought he did very-well.
(Well, at least I got to see him... since I am a fan)

he was fired due to his backstage behavior. Not his performance.

La Cage isn't a classic?

No offense to anyone associated with rent - original company or otherwise... but the original broadway production is still running and it opened in the mid 90s. since WHEN is that a CLASSIC?!? If it IS a 'classic', I feel VERY old.

Other than POTO, Rent may be the oldest show on Broadway....

I personally would go see RENT if I had to choose, just because I am a die hard RENThead. However, La Cage it slef is great too, I've just been told this version stinks.

Anyway, if you get a chance go see both!

If you don't know the two shows, why not invest in the cast albums, give them a listen and decide which of the two shows interests you most. They are as different as can be.

RENT a pop/rock opera based on a 19th century verismo opera.

LA CAGE is a traiditional musical comedy in the style of HELLO DOLLY.

The only recordings of both are the original Broadway casts so you will not hear the same performers on stage but at least you will get an approximation.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
