Posted: 10/25/06 at 2:42pmI'm sure JM is a perfect gentleman, and didn't mean to imply otherwise. I love his work, always have and he is good here with what he is given. Which really isn't that much. Completely Wasted in this show, the man could be doing so much more.

Posted: 10/25/06 at 3:05pmSo I saw the "in preview" pictures on the BWW homepage of Grey Gradens, and what's up with Matt's hair in Act 2? Who's he suppose to be? He looks redunkulous.

It's funny, Rentboy: Many years ago, the poster for the film (the DVD cover) flipped me out a bit as well...like it was a haunted house horror film.
Which it kinda is, but funnier and with better clothes.
For starters.

"And Davie to me was as bland as they come on stage."
One should not start a sentence with a conjunction. And Erin Davie is not bland. She is a very vibrant and gorgeous part of both acts. LaGage's review is ridiculous. Next thing you know, he'll start giving NASA advice on solid rocket boosters. He probably knows as much about that as performance evaluations.
Hey, I get my opinion too:)

Is it a perfect show? No.
Let's face it; the greats of the musical theatre are dead or dying. When Sondheim goes, forget it. NO ONE can replace him no matter how hard you try to convince me with PIAZZA and other pretentious shows and scores.
GG is a show that is a little dull in spots, quite entertaining, and ultimately very moving, especially with the show's final songs. [Dig the opening song of Act Two: STAUNCH!!!!!]
Poor Matt does not have much to do and does his best; the new young Edie is an improvement over the original. John McMartin deserves a better song than "Marry Well," which is better than "Being Bouvier."
Ms. Ebersole and Ms. Wilson deserves Tonys NOW for their memorable work. SPRING AWAKENING will appeal to the 19-year-olds who think AVENUE Q is profound.
GG is for adults or those with adult tastes. Put on your turbans and go! :)

Since I can't find it, and don't want to start a new thread -
What has change between the Off-Broadway and Broadway productions (or, better, the OOBCR and the new Broadway production).
Thanks!

Wow, I was up writing a paper and decided that I should relax for a moment and check BWW. I see this thread and almost everyone who liked Grey Gardens is tearing LaCage apart. You especially, jrb_actor.
I loved Grey Gardens but I did recoginze its faults (although I saw it in previews at Playwrights Horizons). I'll be seeing it tonight and I can't wait. I'm pretty sure what I'll be seeing is the frozen version of the show as it will be opening just three days after I see it. So if I state that Act 1 is still as slow as it was at PH, jrb_actor, you can't give me your crap about "it's not finished yet! give it more time!"
So many people here always gripe about how when someone else has a different opinion than someone else, they immediately reject them. What they don't realize is that it is themselves who are doing it. Whenever someone disagrees with them, someone will go "Well, you obviously didn't get the show." or "Well, that's your opinion, but you're wrong." Yet if they write a positive review it's always "Great review! Can't wait to see this!" It is someone's OPINION. LaCage never stated that his opinion was fact and that everyone should take his example and not like the show.
Oh, and LaCage, you didn't get Garland Grrrl's little joke did you? She was making a play on words. Figure it out.

No, wickedfan, you are quite mistaken. I have not questioned people's opinions about GG--I have questioned other aspects of debate in these threads.
I don't have a problem, personally, with BWWers coming on and posting what they thought of the preview they saw. Others have indeed posted raves and pans--I never attacked their opinion. It's linking said review to something with the name "NY Critics Corner" and making the post look like an official review that I have a problem with. I felt that LaCage had crossed a line. You have every right to your opinion of this and any show. You will never see me (nor have I ever) attack someone for their opinion of GG.
Is it possible that LaCage could see the show again now and have the same opinion? Sure. But, it's also possible that the problems LaCage had have been fixed. The show is now frozen, so official reviewers both professional and not may have at it.
Now, as for the general issue of it being ok to post a positive opinion of a show in previews, but not a negative opinion is a double standard that is fairly obvious to me. Saying something great about a show in the midst of the process is not going to hurt it. But saying something negative could hurt a show that could still fix the errors. It's a matter of etiquette and respect for the process at hand, but obviously people are allowed to post their opinions in an unofficial manner.
You may call this opinion of mine crap all you please if that delights you.

It isn't quite frozen yet. I saw many small changes and improvements within the last week.

Posted: 10/30/06 at 6:44amI'm going again on Thursday (yeah, I'm kind of obsessed with GG), so I'll see what the 'final cut' is then.
