Lansbury in NIGHT MUSIC - what's so special?

When I wrote "cuteness," I was was commenting generally. Of course she wasn't playing Mrs. Potts at the Walter Kerr. But .. like EVERY actor.. there are certain default colors to a character one can focus on. "Cuteness" is only ONE such default that Lansbury SOMETIMES - even if momentarily - falls back on.

...

I think the others have understood the humor in what is essentially a prostitute now living the life of Grand Dame "almost" minor royalty.

Armfeldt didn't achieve her security, social position, and grand lifestyle by inheritance, conquering a nation or marriage. She was just an exceptionally skillful lay. She was practical about her sexual talents used them to seduce and satisfy some of the worlds most powerful men.

There is a great line in the film SMILES OF A SUMMER NIGHT where Desiree suggest that her mother write her memoirs, Armfeldt respond with " darling, I got this chateau and all its trappings by promising NOT to write my memoirs."

I don't get that fun sense of sexual history from Lansbury. I get many other wonderful warm and touching colors... but not the hint of crimson past.

Lansbury in NIGHT MUSIC - what's so special?

I'm of the same mind as the poster. Love her, love her Mrs. Lovett... yes, she is a Broadway legend without a doubt. That said I found it very hard to see anyone but Angela Lansbury on that stage in "Night Music". I felt the same way about her in "Blithe Spirit".
Yes, I'm aware that she IS Angela Lansbury. But you get my drift.
Some actors "become" a character, morph into an original persona they (and the author) have created just for this one play; some sort of absorb their character into their own persona (often a persona we are extremely familiar with). Angela is in the latter camp these days, for me. Now, depending on the role and the performer, I can enjoy both ways of working.
It's just that, being "right out of central casting" for this role, I saw exactly what I expected to see in her Mme. Armfeldt. I thought she gave a lovely performance, but don't see it as the "stuff of theater legend" that some critics do.

Lansbury in NIGHT MUSIC - what's so special?

I would love to see Lansbury but, alas, she will be out by the time I get to NY at the end of June. I'm hoping the show will have extended with someone else -- Elaine Strich or Debbie Reynolds. However, I have see two brilliant Mdm. Armfeldts -- Margaret Hamilton (the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz) played in the national touring company of the original Broadway production (Jean Simmons was Desire). Hamilton was wonderful. I also saw Glynis Johns play Mdm. Armfeldt in one of her last stage appearances. She was very funny and touching and it was cool to see her play Armfeldt knowing that she was the original Desiree.

I have been lucky enough to see Lansbury on stage 3 times -- twice in SWEENY TODD and once in GYPSY, giving probably the greatest stage performance I have ever seen. She is amazing.
