The reason for the shortened show and no intermission is plain and simple. The casino and their corporate owners use the shows as a way to get people into the casino. Therefore, they want to keep the people away from gambling as short as possible. I know that Mamma Mia is a exception to this rule, but most shows do not have an intermission and clock in at 90 minutes or so.
I remember seeing a concert at a casino, by Cyndi Lauper on time and she said that this was her last song because her contract stated that she could not play longer then 90 minutes.
Greed is the answer plain and simple

You can call it greed, but it's simple business sense and a recognition of the fact that the VAST majority of the people who are in those downtown and strip casinos are there from out of town. Those visitors did not decide to come to LV to see a Broadway show. They came to gamble, see the floor shows, and have fun. Those casino owners are not stupid. Putting these big shows into the casinos is doomed from the start. If anything, people will use them to 'baby sit' the kids while they gamble!
The people who live in LV for the most part would love to see some of these shows - they just won't go into town for them. From all I've met, they attend local community theatres and local casinos when they want to gamble, but they only set foot in town when they have visitors from out of town at their homes who must be entertained.
(At least half of my family lives in the LV suburbs and have for more than 20 years. I'm a regular visitor myself and I love to visit the casinos and do the LV fun stuff when I'm there. I consider myself a theatre goer with very good taste - but I've never seen a Broadway show in LV and I have no intention of ever doing so.)

Oh, I did not mean for my post to come off as bad. I should have used another word then greedy. Maybe good business. They corporate owners know their market and they know that people will want to do other things then gambling, so it is in their best interest to get people into their casino, but just don't keep them off the casino floor for that long.
I love Vegas a visit a few times a year. I love to see the shows and love to gamble, but that is why my average trip is 7 days. Most people average 3-5 days, so that does limit what they can do.

You do know that John Goodman was just a rumor and it turned out that they cast Paul Vogt right?

At least the actors were pros even if the producers were asses. Don't they have any brains? Why give the company bad news right before they are ready to go on? Heartless.
From the Associated Press:
"These people are such pros, they went from literal tears in our meeting to extraordinary performers when they hit that stage. I'm so proud of them," co-producer Myron Martin told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
Luxor chief executive Felix Rappaport had said in February that the show, which won eight Tony Awards, was destined for at least a four-year run on The Strip.".

-Adam Shankman.
"I haven't left this building since Windows 3.1!"
"Celebrating a birthday this week: Rene Descartes is 412! Do you know who he is? Then why are you watching this show? You could probably get into college and even get one of those job things. As for the rest of us; Amanda Bynes is 22! Yay!"

I guess they didn't think about how the news would impact the actors. Their main concern seems to have been to get them out of town and off payroll as soon as possible.

Posted: 6/7/06 at 9:46pmI recall reading that another reason they wanted to get it down to 90 minutes is that Vegas likes to do two shows a night on many of their programs.
