Has anyone heard about this? i heard some mention of it.
I hope it's not true for the sakes of the very talented cast and crew. However, if it is indeed closing, maybe it'll bring this Broadway-In-Vegas era to an end. It was never that good of a fit (MAMMA MIA aside) and I'm sure a lot of people out there would much prefer a good old-fashioned tour.

Closes June 11th !!!
Just a few days left !!!
I dont' know that there has been any official word, but it has been flowing through the rumor mill. In other news, billboards for THE PRODUCERS have started to pop up throughout town. I also believe that MAMMA MIA! will finish out its contract at the end of the year and close.
Sorry to hear about this, but there is something to be said about condensing the show and not having it be a hit.
Wow, first Q, now Hairspray. I guess Bway just doesn't work in Vegas. I wonder if POTO will be successful.
I wonder if POTO will be successful.
When I first heard about this, I thought, probably not. I'm still feeling the same way.
I saw this coming. I even posted this would happen when the heavy discount coupons started popping up and some of you came down hard on me. I think Phantom and Spamalot will have similar fates. Vegas is not a theater town.
Yes, i guess Vegas is not a theatre town. People just want to go to casinos and see Celine Dion, it seems. Broadway is still not a popular thing to do for most Americans.
i find it ironic that anyone feels like Broadway in the Desert would BE successful. Las Vegas is all about tacky people with no taste. they should just open up CATS there already...
dang I really want to see it there. I just feel bad for all those actors and crew members. I am sure they are all quite sad. good luck to them!

Phantom might work because of its spectacle. Spectacle obviously fits in well in Vegas. Spamalot may do well too becasue it's more of a "frat boy" type of humor, so that might go over well in Vegas rather than a grown man in a dress like Hairspray.
Phantom will only attract old people and ardent theater fans. Spamalot has a very limited appeal. I think maybe Jersey Boys would have a chance since Mamma Mia has been a success. Vegas is not a theater town.

Sorry to hear this! I wanted to see Austin Miller again as Link Larkin. Maybe now he will get the chance to do it on Broadway.
Vegas is more of a place for "Cats", "Mamma Mia" (the audience probably knows all the songs) or Circus shows. They don't seem to be able to handle good shows.
It is not that they can't handle it. I is just not what people are there for.

When does Light In The Piazza open in Vegas?

"I is just not what people are there for.".
Sounds like you're saying they would support "Mamma Mia" or a circus show with Beatles music, but they aren't there to see Tony Award winning shows? I guess their tastes are worse than I thought.
Broadway belongs in NYC. To try and replecate it in Vegas is not a good odea. And it seems as if that is proving true.
Because I love PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and THE PRODUCERS so very much, I hope for their sake they get SOMETHING from opening out there... but after all this and the attitudes, I am not expecting much.

"When does Light In The Piazza open in Vegas?".
I can see it now. Cut down to 90 minutes with a laser light show included.

When they add in staging where the daughter gets topless.
Seriously... I don't know if many of you have noticed, but even though the bigger casinos are trying this Broadway thing, the main "shaping" going on in Vegas is going back to their "Sin City" roots. Remember? "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas". There's a reason the tourist commission is using that slogan. More and More blue bar reviews are again popping up in the dessert and for good reason. THAT'S what's making the money again.
Remember when they tried the family atmosphere in Vegas? MGM GRAND had a theme park, and that was when all those rollercoasters and themed hotels were built. That lasted less than a decade. Now they're going back the adult playland.
These broadway shows will stick around as a form of entertainment, but they won't do well on their own. They're there mainly for alternate entertainment choices... and if the show isn't doing particularly well, they'll start offering their frequent players free tickets to see those shows. I don't think they'll close a show until they get to a point of 35% paid capacity.
I predict that Phantom will do well in it's first 6 months because of the large marketing push in existance right now. Within a year it will be part of the Vegas landscape. They'll push the technical aspects of the show and may have a total run of two years - or until the Venetian makes it's money back from the initial inestment.

Who's this "they"? People come to New York for theater and go to Vegas for gambling and big spectacles with big names. A lot of people have room in their lives for both.

Let's also not forget that the Vegas WE know isn't the Vegas that the locals know. The Vegas WE know is made of tourists - and they're the ones that would go see these shows.
Vegas locals actually DO have taste. They travel if they want to see something of quality. It's the tourists that don't know any better because they're not going to Vegas for the shows.
