In this instance, you pretty much are.
Trying to stop a bunch of stampeding Rentheads is like...well, trying to stop a bunch of stampeding Rentheads.
With Phantom in Vegas, which is pretty much an alternate universe of something already established (both in fandom and creative work), it's more like swatting a bad puppy on the nose with a newspaper.
Now, where's the classifieds...

Probably like what they did with the film. Cut out Notes II and lines here and there. I bet the Hannibal & Il Muto sequences are shortened as well. I have no clue how they can cut a full hour out though, unless that includes the intermission time.
