Last 5 Years

Does anyone know of a place where I can preview the music for this show before buying it? Preferably a more thorough review than someplace like amazon.com. Someone said I should look into it, so thought this would be a good place to ask. Last 5 Years

re: Last 5 Years

you can go to towerrecords.com and listen to 30 second samples of each song. Trust me, it is a great score and should be owned by every broadway lover. Also, pick up PARADE by the same songwriter (Jason Robert Brown). PARADE is his masterpiece but L5Y is AWESOME too

if they sell it, they'll have a short clip from each song

re: Last 5 Years

I agree. It was amazing and so heartbreaking. Norbert and Sherie were fabulous as ever in it.

Actually The Last Five Years is the only cd I have by Jason Robert Brown. I guess I should check out Parade then, huh?

re: Last 5 Years

i don't know parade that well - i've only heard it once or twice but someone told me it's very similar in some ways to last 5 years which is going to be playing at a theater near me in may - i'm so excited to be able to see it. the cd is great but i'm kind of skeptical of seeing it performed. b/c there on different time lines and the whole show is basically solos i hope it's not boring - i know it won't be if the acting is good b/c the songs are great but as a rule, musicals try not to have more that one solo song in a row partly b/c it gets a little boring

re: Last 5 Years

The Last 5 years is one of my favorite soundtracks ever!!!! Jason Robert Brown is a remarkable songwriter. If you can't preview it, just buy it.
When someone blunders, we say that he makes a misstep. Is it then not clear that all the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill our history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill in dancing. - Moliere

re: Last 5 Years

I was at a music store yesterday, and they had used copies of INTO THE WOODS (OBC) and LAST FIVE YEARS, both resonably cheap. I got ITW, did I choose the wrong one? lol (I only had $15)

re: Last 5 Years

I'd say so...TL5Y is more entertaining than ITW. Both are pretty good though, I'd still take TL5Y first. (btw, I own both...so I am sorta biased).

You've talked up TL5Y, but what about Parade? It's the only one of his I DON'T own. I'm going OBCR shopping tomorrow, should I make it a point to get this one?

Does he have any more shows than the 3 mentioned on this thread?

re: Last 5 Years

i like parade, but i LOVE last five years!

re: Last 5 Years

I love both Parade and Last 5 Years...in fact L5Y hasn't left my car CD player all week. Both, as someone mentioned, are emotionally draining if you invest the time to really listen to them. Don't hesitate to buy either one of them!

re: Last 5 Years

I'm pretty sure SFANW, TL5Y, and Parade are JRB's only shows. They're the only ones I've ever heard of anyway. =)

re: Last 5 Years

Yes, those three are his only shows on record...or CD. =)

I'm a fan of Parade more than the other two (which I find brilliant as well). Any fan of musical theatre should own all three. GREAT stuff.

re: Last 5 Years

well, he did the orchestrations for Lippa's John and Jen

Parade and L5Y have pretty much nothing in common.
