Last 5 Years Question

Last 5 Years Question

Last 5 Years Question#0

Posted: 12/21/04 at 7:51pm

HELLO FELLOW L5Y FANS! I'M GOING TO SKIP THE PRELUDE AND GET RIGHT INTO THE QUESTION. IN MOVING TOO FAST, WHEN JAMIE SINGS:

Some people analyze every detail
Some people stall when they can't see the trail
Some people freeze out of fear that they'll fail
But I keep rollin' on

Some people can't get success with their art
Some people never feel love in their heart
Some people can't tell the two things apart
But I keep rollin' on

IS THAT A REPRISE OF ANOTHER SONG? IT SOUNDS SO FAMILAR, BUT I CAN'T PUT MY FINGER ON IT. I WAS THINKING IT MIGHT SIMILAR TO WHEN HE SINGS:

And since I have to be in love with someone
Since I need to be in love with someone
Maybe I could be in love with someone
Like you...

FROM SHIKSA GODDESS, IN NOBODY NEEDS TO KNOW.

POST SCRIPT: SORRY FOR THE CAPITALIZATION. I ACCIDENTALLY HIT THE CAPS LOCK LIKE TWO POSTS AGO. AT LEAST NOW I CAN'T GET HARASSED FOR RANDOM CAPITALIZATION.

I don't think so...but then again I haven't listened to that Cd in over a year.

It's not really a reprise, but it's definitely the same tune as "Still Hurting". Brilliantly ironic since they are saying completely opposite things. Brilliant show.

Agreed! (I finally got those caps under control.) I thought it was from Still Hurting as well. Like in a faster rhythm or something.

God, I love that show.

I think that OBCR is the only one I can constantly play and not get bored with.

re: Last 5 Years Question#6

Posted: 12/21/04 at 8:13pm

To be nitpicky-it never had an OBCR because it never played on Broadway. It did have an OOBCR. And it is an amazing show.

Wow, I would have never caught myself. I didn't even think about that. I'm going to stick with OCR from now on.

And no that wasn't nitpicky. I would rather be corrected than make the same mistake twice.

Yeah, the melody of that is from "Still Hurting."

There's so much brilliance in this show, I love it. I was in the Seattle premiere, and we had so much fun nit-picking through the score. For example: The beginning waltz is in major, and the end is in minor. Heartbreaking.

I'm so excited to be seeing a production of TL5Y on Thursday in the San Diego area. It's gotten great reviews and I can't wait! I saw an L.A. production two weeks ago that was pretty good (Jamie was excellent, Cathy not so much), but it's one of the most moving experiences to see it come to life on stage after having listened to the OCR so many times!

On the Amazon.com they mention how the lyric "but I keep rollin' along" or something similar is a shoutout to that other backwards musical...Merrily We something by the great Mr. Schwartz.

No I'm pretty sure Stephen Schwartz composed that...
It's a great show, it really deserved those Tony's. I can't believe he didn't win best score though...robbed by some sundhoim fella...

I LOVE THAT SHOW!!!!

When someone blunders, we say that he makes a misstep. Is it then not clear that all the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill our history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill in dancing. - Moliere

Merrily We Roll Along is certainly a work by Sondheim, NOT Schwartz. It has the unenviable reputation of being a big flop on Broadway, closing after only 16 performances; it was the last Sondheim/Prince musical, I believe.

Sondheim would afterwards collaborate with a new book writer/director, James Lapine, to pen Sunday in the Park with George. Some have speculated that the anxieties the character George faces in Act II of Sunday in the Park were inspired by the cold reception of Merrily We Roll Along.

The production I saw last night in the San Diego area was absolutely wonderful! Two young performers (Jeremiah Lorenz and Erin Cronican) sang and acted the two roles to near-perfection, and I liked the staging as well. I feel so fortunate that I was able to see it done right (much better than the L.A. production I saw two weeks ago) and I stayed after to talk to Jeremiah and Erin, who were so appreciative. I wish all you TL5Y fans could have been there with me!!!

While this thread is here, can somebody seriously explain the beginning of "The Next Ten Minutes" to me, because I have NO idea what they're talking about... "Is that one John Lennon?" "No, that one's Jerry Seinfeld," ESPECIALLY.

But an explanation of the rest would be fun, too, since I'm just lazy.
And where are they when all of this is going on?

Thanks.

If you listen to the beginning of the song, he is answering the questions that she sings at the end of the song. It's a time reversal song.
Also, they are boating in Central Park. From the lake you can see John Lennon's apartment, the museum, etc. It's an amazingly clever song.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.
