Laura Michelle Kelly has joined the London cast of the stage version of The Lord of the Rings, according to The Daily Mail. She will play Elven queen Galadriel, the role played by Cate Blanchett in Peter Jackson's film trilogy, when the production opens at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane on June 19 (following previews from May 9).
Kelly won the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in Mary Poppins. Her extensive West End credits include taking over the role of Swallow in the original production of Whistle Down the Wind, Eponine in Les Miserables, Sophie in Mamma Mia! and Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady. She also appeared as Hodel in the original cast of the 2004 Broadway revival of Fiddler on the Roof. The actress released her debut solo album, The Storm Inside, last summer.
The Lord of the Rings, directed by Matthew Warchus, features music by A.R. Rahman and Varttina with Christopher Nightingale and a book and lyrics by Warchus and Shaun McKenna. This stage version was originally presented in Toronto in March 2006. According to The Daily Mail report, the creative team has completely rewritten the book, changed the score and shortened the running time for the West End version.

Does this mean no Sweeney Todd?
UGH..
She can do better.
Good luck with that.
B3TA07, I don't think this rules out Kelly appearing in Sweeney Todd.
She probably starts rehearsels for The Lord of the Rings in March, and Sweeney begins filming in February, so I'm sure she'll just shoot all her scenes early on and then jump right into this project.
She is playing Lucy Barker and only appearing in flashbacks, so she shouldn't have much to film, anyway.
Where did it say she's playing Lucy Barker?
I have yet to see a press release stating that.
See what happens when you p*ss off Cameron.
What producers are throwing their $ away on that thing?

She's Lucy? I thought she was either Johanna or Beggar Woman
It's shocking that she won the Olivier Award for Mary Poppins.
She pissed off Cameron? As in Mackintosh? Lol how, for doing a great job in his newest musical production and winning the show one of it's two Olivers?
Bummer.
I was hoping the actress from Toronto would transfer like a bunch of the other leads.

I have heard good things about Laura's Eponine in Les Mis. I think she should do fine in this.
love her
No...she's playing Johanna
I'm completely under a rock here, but is Laura Michelle Kelly still with Mary Poppins? I do recall it opened a while ago and was wondering if she had left yet and who took over for her, if that happened.
If she didn't p*ss him off she'd be MARY in NYC right now.
I don't think her part in SWEENEY has had any official announcement.
She's too old for Johanna and too young for the Begger Woman.
Lucy IS Begger Women
TeeHEE- LUCKY
who's Lucky?
Will she be Lucy in the flashback Rape scene?
Actually guys, I will be playing the roles of Johanna, Lucy, the Beggar Woman and Tobias. You can stop the speculation.
schwoo
thanks Mandi

She left quite awhile ago. Scarlett Strallen took over from her, but I believe Scarlett just left some time in the last couple of months. The show's website isn't updated.
IAMmyownMUSICAL, she can't be playing Johanna. The character, in the film script, is fifteen years old.
Somethingwicked:
Well as far as I am aware she was always going to play Johanna. Its just that people on IMDB like to chnage things, and one day her role was witched to someone else.
I'm hoping for Johanna, but none of us sadly have any idea.
She's playing The Beggar Woman. They will probably shoot her out in a month or less, and it won't interfere with Lord of the Rings.
