I'm not sure how the categories seem "pathetic". They have more now than in the past and I love that they honor opera, dance and family/entertainment productions as well. Plus, they honor replacement actors with outsyanding performances in continuing runs giving them the same respect as actors in new productions.
Breaking out technical awards for plays and musicals was a fairly recent development in the Tonys, but there's no reason the Oliviers need to mirror us for any reason.
