Lin Manuel Miranda is now an Olivier nominated composer! And Hand to God got a nod for best commedy.
Is it just me or are the categories pathetic?
The best new musical category seems like it could go to anyone, should be a tight race!
Bend It Like Beckham at Phoenix theatre
In the Heights at King’s Cross theatre
Kinky Boots at Adelphi theatre
Mrs Henderson Presents at Noël Coward theatre

seems silly that they have to mention the theatre name LOL
Imagine if the Tonys gave out the "American Express Best Musical" award.
In the Heights versus three musicals based on variations of the same British movie formula.
it must feel pretty surreal to Miranda to be nominated for show he began working in approximately 20 years ago.
Imagine if the Tonys gave out the "American Express Best Musical" award.
To be honest, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest. :)
Remember when Matthew warchus won for Matilda and they set up a ceromony just for him? That was just painfully awkward.
The Oliviers are definitely the poor relation- and the categories seem to change from year to year depending on what they think will get most profile.
I'm not sure how the categories seem "pathetic". They have more now than in the past and I love that they honor opera, dance and family/entertainment productions as well. Plus, they honor replacement actors with outsyanding performances in continuing runs giving them the same respect as actors in new productions.
Breaking out technical awards for plays and musicals was a fairly recent development in the Tonys, but there's no reason the Oliviers need to mirror us for any reason.
