"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Leading Roles this Tony season?

The Best Man cast needs to be divided into leads and featured, with almost all of them featured.

They're all billed above the title. Does anyone know the show? Who would they petition as Featured?

Leading Roles this Tony season?

Many of the parts played by star billing actors in this production are not large roles. Apart from a few principle male roles, the rest of the cast would have absolutely no chance of receiving nominations as leads.

Leading Roles this Tony season?

So they're not all competing against each other for a Tony?
When I see the phrase "the ____ estate", I imagine a vast mansion in the country full of monocled men and high-collared women receiving letters about productions across the country and doing spit-takes at whatever they contain. -Kad

Because they think the actor would have a better chance at winning in the Featured category.

Blair Underwood is male. And I can't imagine the role of Mitch (Wood Harris) being considered leading in "Streetcar"--probably Underwood, Rubin-Vega and Parker will be though.

Traci Bennett. Which category, though? PLay or Musical. I can't imagine that performance not being considered as "musical" even though it's basically a PLAY.

Leading Roles this Tony season?

End of the Rainbow will most likely be considered a play.

Leading Roles this Tony season?

END OF THE RAINBOW is a play. And I don't think they intend to petition it as a musical. Thus, Tracie Bennett would be eligible for a performance award in one of the two Play categories.

Wood Harris is billed above the title, though it makes sense for the producers to petition him as Featured.

Thanks, going to correct Blair Underwood.

Because they might have a better chance of winning as Featured. Example: Catherine Zeta Jones in CHICAGO (yes, I know that was a movie)

Leading Roles this Tony season?

As for The Best Man, for the original production the roles that will be played by James Earl Jones and John Larroquette were nominated in the Lead category (Melvyn Douglas won for the Larroquette role, actually). The role played by Candice Bergen was nominated in the Featured category. For whatever that's worth.

Leading Roles this Tony season?

I'm not sure about Michael Cerveris or Ricky Martin for Evita. In the original production Bob Gunton and Mandy Patinkin were both campaigned for the Featured Category. Who knows though?
#18

Leading Roles this Tony season?

I think the producers of Evita will want Cerveris in Featured and Martin in Leading, which is really how it should've been for the OBC.

Leading Roles this Tony season?

One would expect Bennett's Garland would be considered a lead in a play similar to Jane Lapotaire's tony winning performance in Piaf.

Leading Roles this Tony season?

Does anyone know if NEWSIES have any names above the title? Would anyone other than Jeremy Jordan end up as such?
