Interesting background, bk!
As I listen to that sound clip, here’s what bothers me about it: You hear the main melody; “Take that leap of faith, walk out on the ledge, cast aside your doubts, stand right on the edge” etc. But underneath it, there’s…something else going on. I can’t call it harmony or counterpoint because by definition both of those are meant to compliment the main melodic line, and what I hear underneath doesn’t do that. It sounds like it’s a different song, in a different key, and with a different meter altogether. To me it sounds like a deranged butterfly is banging around underneath the main line, trying to find its way out of there.
I realize that this is a trademark of the “gospel” style, which I freely admit is not a favorite of mine (and if there is a term for this feature I’m not aware of it), but it seems to me that it is….out of balance in that clip. I hope that’s all it is, and that it won’t sound like that in the theater.
Now, this is just my personal opinion, and I may get flamed for it, but I still wanted to share it: I think that the gospel music in Leap should not sound like hardcore gospel, it should sound like “gospel-light”. It should sound more like Broadway’s idea of gospel, not actual, true gospel music. After all, this is a Broadway theater, not the First AME Church, and given the flavor of the non-gospel numbers in the show, making the gospel numbers sound too hardcore might throw everything out of balance. I'm probably explaining this badly - please forgive me if it isn't making any sense.
Sarcasm is an allergic reaction to stupid people.
