See, now if I were independently wealthy, I would fly to LA to see this. Oh well. Excited for the Broadway show, tho!
Emick's principal billing leads me to believe he is definitely playing Sheriff Braverman.
Well, like I said, I was just going on how they'd done it in the past. I wasn't paying attention to who was billed as what, so I could be wrong. It's not a very interesting part anyway, to be honest.
Who's the set designer for this and who is Kendra playing?
Kendra is playing Jonas' (Raul's character) sister. She runs travels with him and runs his show.
The set designer for the show is Scott Pask.

OMG - his COAST OF UTOPIA was outstanding.
How big is Kendras part? Judging by the movie?
She's one of three leads, the other two being Jonas (Raul) and Marva (Brooke). It's a decently-sized part, but somewhat different from the movie. In the movie, the character (Jane, who has been re-named Sam for the musical) is not Jonas' sister, she's just his sidekick/stage manager, and the musical doesn't include her character's romantic subplot from the movie. I can't remember off-hand how many musical numbers she has, because I honestly found her totally unimpressive in the reading, but I can check the song list for you when I get home later if you want to know. She definitely had one big duet with Marva, at least as of January.

I'm kind of surprised the romantic subplot is not in the musical. The butterfly scene from the movie seemed like a perfect moment for a beautiful Menken song. :)
luvtheEmcee, if it's not too much trouble, would you mind writing down the whole song list of the January reading? It would be interesting to read the song titles. :)
Sam, Kassebaum's character, has two significant numbers.
One is a duet with Jonas (Esparza) early in the first act called "Slingshot" and the other is a duet with Marva (Shields) late in the second act called "People Like Us."
Would you mind posting ALL the songs from the reading? Do you have a fav?
Peter - I was too, at first, but the way they've expanded the story in other ways doesn't leave much room for it, and is, I think, worth the exchange.
As far as the song list, to be honest, the reading wasn't open to the public, so I don't know how much the powers that be want the specifics of it out in the world, and I don't want to be responsible for putting them out there. It's not my decision to make. If someone else wants to post it, then that's their call, but I don't feel right doing it. I know that's sort of conservative of me, sorry.
My favorite musical moments included the opening, the act one finale, the initial Jonas/Marva meeting duet and the Jonas/Boyd duet for various reasons, as well as Jonas' big 11:00 number, but more for pertinence to the story than musicality. But I really don't remember there being a song I didn't like. The score's biggest attribute aside from being a Menken creation is its diversity.
Who is Kecia Lewis Evans playing?
She's playing Ida Mae, one of the lead gospel singers, whose son is also in the choir and plays a key role in the plot.

Anyone know if there is pictures of the set design (model) anywhere?
Hah, I love that video. I also like the artwork a lot better now that they're using an actual photo and the jacket is... snazzier.
Not that I've seen yet. CTG released a bunch of meet-and-greet pictures, and one of them shows some costume sketches, but that's about it. I can't wait to see actual production images. Hopefully they don't wait until October to release those!

If anyone who's seen any of the workshops wants to comment on how the final version differs from those, I'd be very interested in hearing. :)
At least there was a song called "Gotta Have Chutzpah" on one of the demos which seems to have been cut.
(Is there any chance this could come to Broadway this season?)

That's pretty similar to what I saw. A few new songs (though some of those could just be new titles), and a little bit of rearranging, but mostly the same, which is good because the score is so wonderful. There are tentative dates for Broadway this season. Here's hoping.
Oh dear.

Got my tix last month! Can't wait to see this one!

I'm hoping someone in wardrobe picked up the wrong robes from the dry cleaners. ugh...
I think they're wearing the same robes in the other clip on their website.
It's about the lace collars....
Listening to those two clips I am really excited for the show although to look at the video it's very chessey but to me, likeable. Anyone else think it could come to Bway soon?
