Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

Theres rumours flying about everywhere on Whatsonstage and Dress Circle message boards, but on this site (generally the most reliable) we have had nothing for months, has anyone heard any REAL NEWS on the London Production, APPARENTLY the other week they had auditions and the main cast have been cast, can anyone confirm this and tell us who's playing them? Any more news on theatre? I know Piccadilly was mentioned alot, but it's been so long now, this may have changed?

Cheers!

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

All I can say is I hope that it does open and finds its audience. It could be as big as Hairspray or flop big-time. I honestly think the main way to this shows success will be the stunt casting.

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

It is happening and auditions have been going on
Though i recently heard it would be done as a UK tour first

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

mind you, Hairspray held auditions ages before it ever came - and some of the auditionees were told later it was off. And then a lot later it was back on! I think the best thing is to believe it is on WHEN it if official. You know how insider nonsense can often be taken with a pinch of salt.

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

I will, i have a feeling it will be a case of many auditions over the next 6 months (if i get through this one)

And why is it a risk, in case people forget what Legally Blonde is between now and sept, even after the film, its sequel, the musical, the MTV broadcast and the reality show?

This show has west end hit written all over it, its camp enough and def better than the many many other movies turned musicals we embrace

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

Any show is a risk at the moment..! As I said in a thred on the Broadway board about Legally Blonde... I don't think it is that favoured as cheesy/camp favourites like Fame, Footloose and SNF in the UK... the show has no songs people know and would need to pull off clever casting... as I don't think the name Legally Blonde (unlike say Dirty Dancing) will generate immediate massive sales.

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

We will have to agree to disagree
Hairspray didn't have any recognizable songs when it opened here what the general public would know, and the original film was hardly a box office smash.

Everyone i know has heard of LB the musical, most have them have downloaded the MTV broadcast, and everyone i know seems to know OhMiGod from the show.

Like i said the film was a HUGE hit here and is on TV every other day.I think LB will do fine. And whilst the show isnt crap and cheap like shows like Fame and SNF it still oozes a camp charm which will win people over.

Also shows dont have to have recognizable songs and stories to do well (if they did i would quit producing shows)

Oh and the show is due to start previews in Sept, im pretty sure the economy will have started to level out by then.

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

The film was actually one of the highest grossing films for a long time (pre mamma mia) for a musical.

Everyone you know in theatre/musicals, perhaps, yes. But ask Joe Public and i doubt they will do "OhMiGod" and that it's been musicalised.

The show is very high quality... but i'm just thinking of getting people initally interested before they've decided to pay and watch... and unfortunatly it joe public will base spending £100 on theatre tickets on "Do I know the show?" "Do I know anyone in it?" and "Do I know any of the songs?"

That's why I think doing a pre West End tour to generate hype on the songs and the show in the UK will aid a much better surivival chance in the West End

Just my opinion :) Best of luck in your audition

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

I was talking about the original Hairspray film

And who pays 100 quid for a thetre ticket???

"Do I know the show?" "Do I know anyone in it?" and "Do I know any of the songs?"

if that was the case 99 percent of musicals including Les Mis, Saigon etc etc would never have been hits xx

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

Very true... and if Les Mis, Miss Saigon opened now...who's to say they would have been hits? Back tens, twenty ago the case of d-list celeb casting, reality shows etc weren't around. Therefore people took the creative names into play... "Its a new Cameron M show" "Its a new webber show" or "Its playing at the drury lane" etc ...

(£100 on a pair of tickets btw)

The original hairspray film, no. But the success of the musical film in 2007 in the UK over the summer and the stage show opening a few months later I would certainly say help people recognise songs with more advertising and branding.

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

It is hardly guaranteed to be a sure-fire hit. The film, while reasonably known in the UK, was barely successful here and most people I know who are occasional to regular theatregoers know very little of the stage show (rather than those friends etc who are dedicated musical theatre fans who know every thing about every show and all sorts of insider rumour, speculation and gossip).

For me it was one of the most trite, desperately unfunny musicals I have seen for a while despite some fun numbers and its perkiness is in no way a guarantee that it will do well with UK audiences. Compared to Hairspray, for instance, which is arguably a better story, has better music and has more appeal. Also with Hairspray it was VERY well known among schools, as was Wicked - those two became popular in schools about a year after their respective broadway productions opened and before the Hairspray musical film came out.

I think Legally Blonde's arguable "cleverness" as a musical is no indication whatsoever of its potential success - it does not of course work like that in theatre: many very clever productions, even those that have been very well received, have failed and similarly many poorly received (by critics and/or by message board regulars on many boards) succeed.

Even if the economy does pick up later next year, that will barely help the production (or any production) IF it does come. It will be dubious whether there is a sustainable market for it. Yes, in London high camp fluff does tend to reign but there is a limit.

Either way, if it does come (and I hope it does not as we dont need yet another vacuous musical) it needs very clever marketing and needs to sell itself bigtime. Sadly London is very poor at actively promoting and advertising its theatre with a somewhat arrogant expectation that "word of mouth" will do the trick. And posters on tubes and buses barely does the trick.

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

the film was more than Barely succesful, it did very well at the box office and became one of the top rented/bought DVDs and Videos

I guess with LB it all comes down to a persons preference, sense of humor and age.I think girls will love it and the gay guys under 35 will probably have a blast at it, i also think middle aged women will fall for its charm.

Im sorry but the show has an original score with a decent enough book and lots of potential, for me that stands head and shoulders above most of the dire rubbish playing (or coming in to ) the West End at the moment.

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

We watched the LB movie in an English lesson t'other day, even the chavs loved it!
Legally Blonde can be entertaining to anyone in it's own special way, and to a greater extent the musical can. It's an easy show to watch, and nowadays that's what everyone is after, hence shows like Marguerite and Imagine This failing and The Wedding Singer and Hairspray being succesful. Speaking of which; The Wedding Singer - a hardly succesful movie in the UK with an original score when it was brought to the stage, very little stunt casting and from what I could tell when I saw it, found an audience who loved it! If The Wedding Singer can find it's audience then Legally Blonde will do so with great ease.
To NOT bring it to the UK would be a mistake!

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

The film and subsequent rentals/purchase was moderately successful here. It did ok but that's about it. But even so, it could be the leading film for many months in the charts and that means sod all in terms of people wanting to see it on stage. Ditto tv adaptations. Look at LOTR filmwise/huge dvd sales etc and how poorly that did with audiences on stage. Also Bad Girls (one of the highlights of the ITV schedules and dvd releases) but the attempt at the stage show (dire) failed to find much of an audience. And ditto for so many other stage shows arising from successful films, tv shows

Yes LB has an ok story and an original score (and one or two really nice songs among the majority of derivative pap in there) but really that barely qualifies to make it a winner. Point taken re: your enjoyment of it, but however good it is for you (or however bad it is for others) is no way an indication of its potential - one way or the other.

I guess we will see if it makes it to previews........

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

With LOTR its a chance that an audience who enjoyed the movies would not be the kind of audience willing to watch a musical. Fangirls who love stuff like LB will sit through anything, i'm telling you. A friend hates musicals, is obsessed with Legally Blonde, I gave her the CD, now all she wants is to see it! (We made plans to do so together if it makes it London hehe...) Things like Bad Girls and LOTR attract non-musical going audience. To a lesser extent Bad Girls, but didn't that have good sales etc. but was just eaten alive by the critics? I didn't really follow what was going on there...

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

critics have really not got much power at all over audiences in the UK. They really havent. Bad Girls on stage just did not appeal to folk, it wasnt a great production at all (it was pretty poor), and despite what was clearly only a very few people who loved it, that was not enough to compensate for people who went and did not feel they liked it enough to rave about it to others.

LB barely did brilliantly on broadway after the fanbase all but dried up. Not sure there would be that much of a fanbase to kickstart it here. But it would be great to have a successful newish show here despite my loathing of the piece.

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

See i have to disagree with Bag Girls as well, this was a genuinely good show, staged well and performed by a brilliant cast, hell if you read back over the reviews for it (i will post them again when i have time) the critics really liked it.

I was a huge Bad Girls TV show fan (and have to agree with the statement about it been the highlight of the ITV schedule) but did not want to go near the musical, as a fan of the TV show oi thought it was going to be dreadful, we only went to see it because i had seen everything else, turned out i had a great night.

What im trying to say is that fans of something like Bad Girls TV series and Lord Of The Rings are not really gonna go flocking to a musical, whilst regular theatre goers see them as to much of a Fan Thing to give them a chance, thats what led to Bad Girls critically praised but short lived run (though im sure the tour will do very well)

re: Legally Blonde - What's Happening?

For Legally Blonde to be successful, it needs to whore itself out to as many people as possible.

Get good advertising in! Half the problem for new shows is that most people have no knowledge of their existence, and you can't sell something to someone who is oblivious to it.

Getting a good commercial together, shown on MTV as well as ITV etc would be good. As successful as the film was, and still is to a certain extent, it's not in the front of peoples minds - as say Hairspray is, with the film only coming out last year.

Stunt casting may be required, perhaps not for Elle (unless they're really good of course)...but maybe for Paulette/Emmet/Warner etc, or a lesser character - but still present, Margot.

After the success of Mamma Mia, I think we can all agree that women have the ability and desire to search out chick flick musicals and make it extremely lucrative. Though of course, LB won't have the benefit of huge stars and ABBA fans.
