My girlfriend and I went to Thursday nights show of Les Mis (with some nicely priced student rush tickets) and it ended up with a lot of interesting disturbances.
The cast started off a little slow I felt, but that's not the point. When Daphne Rubin Vega came out, it started going down hill. First people started talking during the whore scenes like the didn't care about Fantine at all. Then some guy a few rows ahead of me laughed pretty loud twice during I Dreamed A Dream, and after that he yelled "Shutup" during the middle of the song. More people started talking, and everyone was mostly glad the song wsa over after she was done. Then the ushers came around and started trying to act like they were going to kick people out, but never did anything.
People kept getting out of their seats the entire show and walking up and down the main two center aisles. Then at intermission, some guy complained about some high school girls, and said they were talking on their phone during the show, which I didn't hear myself, but is obviously rude. Then, during the middle of Bring Him Home, the ushers behind me started talking loudly while watching the show.
I don't know. It was just a weird night. Had to post it up :)
i woulda bitchslapped someone cause i love daphne...thats all

I read this post and I laughed and laughed.
I am a terrible person.
Last night people didn't stop crinkeling candy wrappers and coughing during the entire second act. It was exrtremely annoying.

That's because you think you are Lea Salonga!
I must have gone on an off night. The audience was perfectly pleasant!
BSO, I love you.
That's all I wanted to share.

I dont think people can help the coughing. sometimes a coughing fit just happens. and if you paid $100+ to be there, or any amount of money, then you still deserve to watch the show. Have some sympathy. You don't know what people have gone through that day.

Sssssh, don't tell...
Noisy ushers? That's nothin'.
We sat in the front row at Kiss Me Kate a few years ago. In that theatre, there's no solid wall between the pit and front row -- it's just open railing. The two horn players in front/below us chatted for half the first act. They were louder than the amplified performers on stage. We leaned forward a couple times to try to catch their attention, and they either didn't notice or just ignored us. Finally, Paul Gemignani (the conductor) noticed us and flickered his music stand light to get their attention. They looked up at him, he held his finger up to his to SHHH them, and that was that.
I've never seen (or heard) anything like it.
even if you don't like a performer, it is so rude to talk and laugh and yell at them during their performance. i'm not a big fan of daphne either but she's still a human being so people should respect her enough to stay quiet while she's on. i would hope an avid theater goer would not be so rude.
when i saw it there weren't any disturbances like that.

I like that Paul story! Very good of him to at least take notice as well as conduct the show!
Ok sometimes you can't help laughing through bad performances.... just try and muffle it.
"and after that he yelled "Shutup" during the middle of the song"
Wow, that was totally uncalled for. Did it sound like it was directed at Daphne or another audience member who was talking. Also was it far away or closer to you, and did you think Daphne heard?
I did not like Daphne, but I feel bad for her after reading that.
mattnyc2, I don't know... That was a good one
I can't believe the nereve of some people. I'll admit, I feel Daphne is miscast as Fantine vocally, but she is one of the strongest Fantine's I have seen act/BE the part. She is by no means terrible in the role, simply very vocally different than any other Fantine ever. But my goodness... To laugh out loud and holler "Shut up!" *snorts* Totally uncalled for- in any theatre anywhere, no matter the show or performer. Reading this made me angry and sad
I am very sorry that happened.

The guy was definitely talking to Daphne. The guy was probably about 14 rows back in the orchestra so its definitely possible she heard it, but it was at a pretty loud moment in the music if I remember correctly, so I'm not sure. But it was definitely to her.

That is just so rude. I don't care if you like the person or not, when seeing a Broadway show or any live theatre show, you keep your mouth closed unless it's to laugh at a joke or a little cough. Those people should've been thrown out for that.
I don't understand why some many people think that they can do alot of the stuff they do at a live show. Do they think the actors on stage can't hear them cause they can. It's not a movie.
It funny cause last night, I went with my acting class to see Dutchman, and during a good amount of the show, these two guys from one of the other acting classes were talking very loudly during a good amount of the show. It wouldn't have bothered me if the theatre was big, but this was a small theatre and they were close to the stage.

OMG That's horrible! I would have hurt someone. Most likely those people.
i'm a terrible person too because that was funny. i enjoy Daphne as a person, though i'm not fond of her acting. and anyone talking during theatre is just annoying to be regardless. i treat theatre like church and everyone best shut up!
Wow, that's horrible! Did you like the rest of the performance though?

As for u/s... sadly Celia was out, and I was dying to see her. Her u/s Megan Mcginnis was pretty good. And two ensemble members were out, so I guess some swings were on. As for the rest of the performance, I enjoyed most of it. I did not like Daphne as Fantine at all, but the rudeness should not have gone on. I love Aaron Lazar, and I knew I would after seeing him in Piazza. Drew Sarich was a hilarious Grantaire(sp?), and most everyone else was great, I felt.

Glad you liked Drew! yea, I saw the show for the 2nd time a week back, and I felt Daphne was better. That is just completely unclassy fo anyone to say to her. She is an incredibly nice person and deserves only compliments, not crude remarks. Shaem, shame, shame.
