In that first one, at least Eponine can sing.
Marius sounds like Adam Wyley.
Les Miz is not a property that most schools should consider. I'm not saying it's impossible to do in high school, but you need to know that you have really fantastic singers.

I saw a production at my local highschool 3 times because it was that amazing, the acting, singing, set, orchestra, and lighting as well as costumes were are very professional.

I saw a really wonderful performance by a local high school that riveled any of the touring versions that played here. As with any show, there was one weak link - Javert but to be fair it was this guys first time on stage.
So it can be done extremely well by high schools.

Posted: 4/27/08 at 11:12amI'm actually doing the school edition this summer for a local community theater. I was cast as Fantine. I think we have the talent to pull it off. I'm very excited, it's my first big lead in a musical and it's in a show like Les Mis as Fantine.

With Clay Aiken in Spamalot, all of Broadway is singing a collective "There! Right! There!" -Me-
"Not Barker, Todd is the only person I've ever known who could imitate Katherine Hepburn...in print." -nmartin-

I actually saw a pretty good school edition of Les Miz.
No turntable, which actually made it pretty good.

Posted: 4/27/08 at 9:21pmI wish not having a turntable meant a good LMSE. Neither of the ones I saw had one.

I've seen two LMSE productions and they were both awesomely bad in different ways. I just don't understand why, when there are so many shows that schools could put on that don't have such huge vocal, staging and costuming demands, that LMSE just has to be done. I'm sure it's fine if you are at a performing arts school, but many schools that put it on don't have what it takes to make the production good.
The defense often is that the kids are learning a lot and want to put on the show, but I'm sure they could learn a lot from doing a show that is more realistically within their means.
