From interviews I have heard it sounds like she does have a pretty tough skin, but it also sounds like she has heard her share of bashing. But please remember that I was just stating a guess on my part and it could have nothing to do with why she takes so long to come out.
Maybe when she looked less than thrilled people were asking her to sign things related to the movie? Or maybe they just caught her at a bad time, who knows. I have never really thought to bring her rent relates stuff but I'm running out of other things for her to sign (sort of a joke between her and I that I keep brining her something new and different every time I see her) so may have to resort to Rent stuff soon.

KQuill, I said that if NJRae's theory was correct (about her waiting for people who might "bash" her to leave the stagedoor before coming out), THEN she needs to get tougher skin. Read the conversation before attacking me, please.
As a sidenote (and as I've stated various times before), I'm not anymore sympathetic toward her than anyone else who performs on Broadway as far as reading negative comments goes. By walking onto the stage, you're opening yourself up for comments on your performance, both good and bad. If Daphne has had more negative comments than positive on her performance... well, that's the way this business goes. Yes, it's great that she gets up there and performs eight times a week... like every single other person on Broadway does.

I went to the stagedoor on Tuesday after the matinee, and everyone except Aaron came out and signed, took pictures, etc. Daohne came out pretty fast, and she personalized everyone's playbills, talked to a couple who were visiting from Puerto Rico (she spoke Spanish with them), and asked what happened to my hand because I had it wrapped up. I told her what happened, she hugged me, and told me to feel better soon. She took pictures with everyone who asked, which I thought was awesome. Definitely one of the best stagedoor experiences I've ever had.
Edit: A little girl standing next to me told Daphne "You were my second favorite character." Oh, the honesty and innocence of children...

I figured you would respond that way, as you should. One, I wasn't personally attacking you. Two, I read the conversation.
I just think we should cut her a little slack and have some understanding. The meer suggestion of her not having a tough skin, no matter the circumstances, just annoyed me - since she so obviously DOES.

Posted: 12/31/06 at 3:39pmIf, in some alternate NJRae universe, Daphne truly didn't come out of the stagedoor for a while because she didn't want to communicate with those who might dare to say later that they didn't enjoy her performance, then yes, I think she would HYPOTHETICALLY need to get tougher skin. Considering this is all in an hypothetical, completely unlikely universe, though, I wouldn't be too concerned about me making a "meer [sic] suggestion" about your girl Daphne. For the record, I think her proverbial skin seems perfectly fine.

Oh my, I did not have any intention of starting such a debate. I just remembered reading on here that someone had said that she (Daphne) once made a comment about how "Even though she was horrible at least the show was still good". She says that she does not read reviews, but has been heard to say that she knows some people are not happy with her portrayal of the character. I wasn't saying that by coming out later she was hiding or anything. Just thought that maybe by staying in a little longer she was being sure that when she came out, the people waiting there would be the ones who had a sincere interest in meeting her. I mean, wasn't it someone on here who ripped her performance to shreds but then went on to say how nice she was at the stage door?
I don't know, it was just a thought. Obviously not a good one. Didn't mean to spark such a debate. Just really wasn't sure of any other reason she would consistantly be one of the last ones out the door. As someone else said maybe she just wants to go out to a smaller crowd so she can spend more individual time with them.
And KQuill, I agree with you whole heartedly. She has some pretty tough skin . . . just listen to some of her interviews and you there will be no room for any question in anyones mind!

Posted: 12/31/06 at 9:09pmI was at the stage door literally just after the show ended, and I got to meet most of the cast, but I had already missed Gary! I was surprised, too, because he was still in his makeup from Beggars at the Feast, which was harder to get off than anything that the rest of the cast was wearing, probably.

Then stop being so defensive on the behalf of a stranger.

I did not mean to come off as defensive. I was just trying to put out some ideas as to why she may take so long to come out after the show. If I were in her shoes, that would be one of my reasons. But then, I do not have the thick skin that she certainly possesses (sp?).
Coooolkid: I doubt that most people actually walk up to an actor and tell them that they disliked their performance (at least I hope they don't!). But I do think that a lot of times people think that actors don't have ears. I have been at many stage doors where an actor will come out and someone in the crowd will say to their friend, "Oh, that's the one I didn't like," or "Oh, I hated him," or "I really liked so-and-so so much better as whoever". I'm sure there are people out there who will say this directly to an actor, but I'm sure they are few and far between.

Don't sweat it, NJRae. It doesn't take much for people on this message board to twist things around, and it doesn't happen just to Daphne.
Pathetically, coming out late from a stage door seems to have joined not signing autograph as another thing to bash a performer about.
And, I've been at a stage door where someone would get an autograph from a performer and then turn around and ask their relative standing by who that person was. LOL. They get autographs just because.

I was stagedooring after a preformance of Les Miz. One person asked her very friendly how did it effect her preformance to know that the times gave her a bad review? She said that she didn't really care about the revews at all and didn't pay attentaton to them. She said that she knew what they said and then she started to joke about how Ben Brantly clearly doesn't know tallent cus he bashed her. And, in regards to the whole Rent thing. I think that people originally thought she must not be happy cus her friends are doing it and she isn't. And that sorta drifted into the norm as to how she actually feels. Well, that apperently is a common misconseption sp? Accoridng to her in an interview that was done a month or two ago she said that she was okay with not being in the moive and that people are making a bigger deal of tit then i was. She went on saying that she is glad in a way that they are making a big deal about it cus it shows that the fans care and love her which she loves to know.

Thanks musicalsfan, I know things tend to get twisted around on boards. I'm sure part of it is just that you can't exactly hear a persons's tone of voice or see their facial expression so it is hard to know what they really mean by what they are saying. Other times it is just that people like to pick fights. I try to explain myself as much as possible but there comes a point where I just have to throw in the towel.
I've also heard people ask who someone was or who they played after they got their autograph. Amazes me. If they don't even know who's autograph they are getting then really what is the point?

I did not mean to come off as defensive.
You do defend her in nearly every single thread you can, even in ones that barely have anything to do with her. That's not taking things the wrong way or misreading tone/emotion; when someone appears at nearly every Daphne mention, then the number of interpretations to be made is not very large.
#43re: Les Mis Stage Door...
Posted: 1/1/07 at 5:08pmOk, then it was me misinterpreting you. I didn't realize you were talking of past threads, I thought you specifically meant this one. Here I was simply explaining my comment. But if you want to talk of past threads, then yes, when people voice a negative opinion of her, I am among those who voice a positive one. If you want to call that defending her then thats fine. I don't think that I have gone out of my way to defend her, nor do I think that she needs defending. But if that is what you want to call it . . .

Keep on staying positive about Daphne if you want, NJRae.
Last I checked, we still aren't a police-state much as GWBush has tried to make it one. We still have the right to defend someone.
It is incredible that defending a "stranger" is considered a "bad" thing. So, does that mean that all that this message board is good for just trashing any actor, a "stranger"?

Thanks again, musicalsfan. I don't think it is a matter of staying positive, but I'm certainly not afraid to say I am a fan of someone even when others are busy bashing her. And I'm not going to let my opinion be swayed by those around me. But thanks for the support!

Posted: 1/1/07 at 10:00pmPeronally I am a fan of her work. However, I think that when I first heard about her being in Les Miserables I was skeptic. But, when I saw her I wanted to like her so much cus I am a big fan of her work. I thought she was just good not great.

I respect Daphne so much for being as classy and gracious as she is. She's a famous broadway actress who was an unconventional casting choice - and she has been given negative reviews. Bad reviews suck for ANYONE to receive, but I have to think that it sucks even more for someone who is well-known.
I give her (and any other famous performer) a lot of credit for dealing with people who are rude. It's unbelievable to me that someone would have the nerve to say something negative about someone's performance TO THEIR FACE, but I know it happens. Sounding off on the "boards" or in a review or even with friends is one thing - but TO SOMEONE'S FACE? That's just classless.
I'm telling you, thick skin or not, can't be easy for ANYONE to deal with that. It sure would piss me off! Especially in the cases where rude people just have no freakin clue what they are talking about. That would piss me off even more!
Would I have cast Daphne as Fantine? I'd have to say no. But that doesn't mean she deserves to hear that from me - or anyone else who might agree with me - at the stage door of HER SHOW.
And to anyone who would dare (or has dared) to say something like that to DRV:
KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT and let the diva sign her Playbills in peace!

Just wanted to say how much I LOVE this production and all the people in the cast. It's such a wonderful experience. You haven't seen LES MISERABLES unless you have seen this cast. Last night I saw the show and stage doored the show. Everyone was exceedingly kind and generous with their time, even though it was freezing cold and rainy. *Sighs* It's so cool to look back and think how there were days when Alex G could just walk out the stage door in Sweeney and no one would stop him, and now...he's where he is. Bravo.
Ooh, I also wanted to add how incredibly kind Drew Sarich always is. He walked out on his cell phone and when he saw I wanted to talk to him, he hung up his phone. I was impressed with that...
