I can't say I really like them. They don't sound very "gothic." But I'm sure they'll sound better with Hugh and Carolee singing them as well as with the orchestrations.

Interesting... It's kind of hard to judge what I think, since I just can't hear Elton as a vampire. But the lyrics are good. I really hope it's a good show. The books were great.

I'll be interested to hear Hugh and Carolee singing these songs, their talent will hopefully make them soar...
Wow...and that's not a "good" wow.
If the score is to be judged based on those two thirty-second clips (and should it not be, as they are meant to be promotional materials?), this show is really in trouble. Talk about generic. Mr. John, you are not writing hit singles, you are writing songs for specific characters. Actually, characters that drink blood. You can do much better than "let's live forever in a crimson kiss" or whatever those lyrics are. And the melodies sound like something Michael Bolton would sing. This does not look good...

Baratone said everything I wanted to.
The clips sound like an Elton John top 40 tune, But what did we think they would sound like? Burt Bacharach?? Of course, This show is going to have Elton's sound to it - and if the critics pan him for it get ready, You thought you saw attitude when Boy George went off daily on MR - NOTHING like the fury of Elton, Goodness, This man throws fits in airports and goes off on Tina Turner during a rehearsal, You are dealing with Elton John here - Don't forget that. I DO wish this musical to be a Hit, It can be done, just needing the right combination, this could be it, I hope it is.
Crimson kiss was definately the better of the two. The sad part was I heard an exact chord from "Electricity" from Billy Elliot ("Like a fire deep inside") did anyone else hear it?
I want this show to be fantastic. We'll see.

Well I love the "overture" music on the website. It sounds really good and catchy, and I find myself going to the website just to hear it, which is weird cause I don't usuallyc are for overtures. And I love the poster design. I think it has great potential, but the songs kinda sucked. Hopefully, they'll sound better in contex and w/ orchestrations and the talented actors.

The overture is INSANELY cheesey.
But I'm an Elton fan. And while I don't think the songs are for Broadway, I do like them.

Well I guess this isn't a legitimate argument for those who disliked Aida... but for those that did (i.e. myself), think about how those songs sounded with Elton and others singing them on the concept album or whatever that was. Those were pop singles too, but I thought they worked marvelously in that show and that soundtrack still puts me to bed at night. Heather and Adam transformed them, and I think Hugh and Carolee will as well.
Geez, some of you are so judgmental, lol! Seriously people, I don't belive that these clips are finished products, they have probably since been tweaked. I am going to see it in San Fran so that should give a better idea of what is to come! In another thread someone said that they saw and heard a preview of the music, set renderings, etc., and said that it was marvelous. You're pathetic if you call the show crap this early in the game, it isn't even "actually" opening until December...Hold off a bit, lol!
P.S.
I should say the same thing about Tale of Two Cities sounding a bit generic, but hey, I HAVEN'T SEEN IT YET!
Later!

Just horrible...nothing redeemable about those horrible clips. I can't believe he would deem those suitable to promote the show.

I think the clips are great. I can't wait to here the songs sung by the actual cast and to see them used in the context of the musical! December can't come soon enough! :)

i'm seeing it January 18th, it should be marvelous
Wow I was really looking forward to this show and finally hearing Elton write something that was dark and creepy, but no those two clips are way too popish for my liking. Oh well, I will wait until I see the show to completely judge it.
Well, it's not as if the AIDA concept recording sounded exactly like the show. I'll keep an open mind, though I didn't care for Aida and the score to Billy Elliot is actually quite dull.
I'll hope for the best, because the idea for Lestat has potential. I just hope it doesn't become a huge mish-mosh like Aida.

I think Aida actually had a lot of dark tones to the songs. I went back and listened after hearing those Lestat song clips and besides the obvious upbeat numbers there are a lot of dark moments in the score with somewhat eerie or heavy compositions. A lot darker sounding than those two Lestat clips. So hopefully Elton channeled some of that style because if Aida sounds darker than Lestat than... sheeit.
When were there dark or eerie moments in the aida score? I found it very popish and upbeat.
You should also remember that Elton John, who IS a pop artist, is recording those songs. Also keep in mind that these probably are not the instrumentals that will be used in the show, I'm sure it is more lavishly orchestrated, and try to remember that a song can take on an entirely different tone when it is performed by someone with a different vocal quality; Elton John is not classical in the slightest whereas Hugh Panaro and Carolee Carmello are. I think when the songs are in the context of the show, sung by the actual cast, and accompanied by full orchestrations, they will take on a whole new light and a whole new sound-quality. We all know and respect Hugh, Carolee and other members of the cast, I cannot wait to hear some of the other pieces from the show being perfomed by them. I think that the idea of a musical version of Ann Rice's novel-series is a wonderful idea and has a lot of promise. Rice seems to hold this musical version in high regards, based off of several interviews, so well see what happens when it opens....Looking forward to San Fran!

what kind of reviews did the Aida score get from reviewers?
I liked the sound of Crimson Kiss, and can imagine Carolee will sing it wonderfully.
But I really don't see how the song itself will fit in a show. But we'll see...

The two clips are rough cuts, and should sound great with the cast. I am looking forward to this one in a good way, not like "In my Life" that I looked forward to like a trainwreck.
