"Lestat" on Broadway

I have seen so many folks here already branding "Lestat" a flop who (most) have not even seen it yet - and it isn't even in previews in New York yet either. How can you throw this show away in such a cavalier fashion before it even has it's chance?

Hey, a lot of people here were predicting that Nathan Lane was going to be nominated for an Oscar in the "Best Actor" category way before the movie was ever released!

The whole nathan lane thing is a awful analogy and totally unrelated. To answer your question, We cannot deem it a flop yet. So everyone needs to stop

Wickedfreak: I concur. I can't believe these people saying that the show will be a flop (VinnieTheIceman/The Woman in White, anyone?) Just wait til the show opens, and we'll see, people.

re: 'Lestat' on Broadway

yeah, I agree too. I can't wait to see Lestat on Broadway... and I take any reviews good or bad with a 'grain of salt'. I'll make my decision on how good it is, how well it lives up to the novels, after seeing it, myself.

re: 'Lestat' on Broadway

I also agree with the original poster here.

Lestat is in an out of town preview period in SF. It doesn't even officially open in this out of town timeframe in SF until the 8th. But already there are threads proclaiming this show a dismal failure. Many threads are written by posters who have seen ONE performance. One performance during the FIRST WEEKS of the out of town, preview period! Some negative posts come from posters who haven't seen the show at all, only a video clip.

Out of town shows change from night to night. The whole point of being out of town is to work the show without the glare of critics. These days may be over, however, since chat boards like this have come about.

I saw Buskers (Stage Door Charley) here in SF when it was previewing. Saw it three times. Each time I saw it, it was a different show. Different opening scenes, different songs, and different dance numbers. Hell, there were even different set pieces. Wicked had scenes in SF that never made it to Broadway. White Christmas last year was a little different than this year. A scene and a song had been removed. That's the point of being out of town. Work the material, shape it, see what works and what doesn't, THEN present the show on Broadway (if they are lucky).

So, someone loudly proclaiming the failure of the show based on one PREVIEW performance seems a little ridiculous.

I agree with everything thus far said.

And besides. I DID see it and I loved it. Spread the joy. :)

re: 'Lestat' on Broadway

I would personally be very shocked if the show does make it to Broadway without taking some time off to "retool".

The show needs much better songs, a totally different book (covering a much shorter storyline) and a director who understands character development and how to convey the eroticism of Anne Rice's work.

I know they are working hard on this and not only a load of big money but big names are on the line for this one to work. I'm rootin' for this one.

Can we take a vow that we won't discuss the progress of "Lestat" until Elton is back from his honeymoon in Venice?

re: 'Lestat' on Broadway

Piazzaslight, WIW IS a flop and Lestat will be too. It's a complete fiasco in SF. There's already discussion about the next show at the Palace. Very rarely can bad shows be fixed enough from out of town. Made better, yes. Totally turned around, no. Movin Out was a glaring exception.

re: 'Lestat' on Broadway

Remember that WICKED in SF was much different then the WICKED that hit Broadway. SF audiences are a different breed as well. Also, it seems that many posters are of a certain breed themselves and don't seem to like anything other then creating negativity.
As Lestat might say, BITE ME...:) Couldn't resist. Let's see what happens and what turns up here, THEN we can take a stab at it. :)

re: 'Lestat' on Broadway

Wicked was quite similar in SF to NY. The reviews were even worse in NYC than in SF. Lestat however, is not Wicked and will not be able to overcome the onslaught.

Now, hang on! Are you forgetting who's producing this? It's Warner Bros. They;'re not gonna let it flop. They'll pour millions at it. They'll do heaps. It will run for enough time for people not to think, in general, it was a flop

Just for the record, here are some out-of-town "flops" that somehow managed to turn things around:

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
Hello, Dolly!
Fiddler on the Roof and, um .....

Wicked

re: 'Lestat' on Broadway

From what I recall Wicked was not a flop here in SF when it tried out... I had a tough time getting tickets.

True...But, just to keep perspecive, would someone like to post a list of out of town flops that DIDN'T turn it around?

re: 'Lestat' on Broadway

Wicked was not a flop in SF. It just didn't get good reviews. Once it hit Broadway, the reviews were mediocre as well. The show didn't really become huge until a few months after it opened. Tickets were relatively easy to get the first few months.

re: 'Lestat' on Broadway

So how did Wicked become a hit? It didn't have great reviews in either SF or NYC, but it found an audience that came to love it. Similarly for a lot of other hits.

Which shows that Vinnie is just one voice here, who has somehow already decided the show will fail, whereas I have seen it and love it, and think it has a good chance of being a hit. Even if some people don't like the show after the "real" reviews come out, it is up to the audience as a whole (which is made up of people who don't read these boards) to decide if it will be a hit or not.

Please keep an open mind until well after the opening (at least 2-3 months)...

re: 'Lestat' on Broadway

I remember this same ugly gossip surrounding another seemingly equally difficult piece. It had a huge following devoted to the book and movie versions... everyone said it was a mess, unfocused and the songs were dull, bland, and blah blah blah... That show was Kiss of the Spider Woman...

I find it sad that most of the same people who (by the tone of their posts) relish pronouncing a show as a flop, unfixable, etc. are also the same ones who moan and groan that there is never anything new out there...

It could also be that people expect Lestat to be commercial (i.e. Wicked) and not artsy (i.e. Passion). Perhaps the creatives are looking for something more toward the artsy end of the spectrum... if that is, indeed the case, then look for people to either LOVE IT or HATE IT. I don't know many people who sit on the fence when it comes to more "artsy" shows...

And let's face it... how much real work is being done by Elton right now? He's just married, on a honeymoon... I'm surprised the producers didn't put the show off until after all that ewas over...

And finally, isn't the comparison between Lestat and Wicked more than slightly inane? AS far I can tell, the only things they have in common is that they both are based on beloved books and both are trying out in SF. For those of you who insist on a Wicked comparison...let's just say that MAYBE Wicked is the Glinda of musicals and Lestat is the Elphaba... chew on that Ozians...
