Let a BIG BLACK WOMAN stop the show!

Who are your favorite big, brassy, black leading ladies?
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Sharon Wilkins, Lillias White, Felicia Fields, the late Nell Carter, the now svelte Jennifer Holiday, the beautifully big-boned Jennifer Hudson, and, of course, Ken Page.

Jennifer Hudson continues to surprise me. I just cannot wait for DG. But no one can forget about Lilias White. Tough Call.

Charlo Crossley. She rocked as Motor Mouth on the HAIRSPRAY tour.

I second Frenchie but we can't forget Fredi!
"I wrote a book: "How to Be Popular". Now I've put together a top ten list of how to help you: -Elphie, everyday... shower. I mean, who knows? Maybe some of that green is gonna come off! -Deodorant Elphie. No body likes a stinky witch! -I think we've covered the hair, we'll get to that. -Clean underclothes. That's all I'm gonna say. -Look at your posture. That's no way to be popular! -Bed made, room straightened. We've done that. -Colors blended. Oookay. -But the most important thing to have, to make yourself popular, is to keep your beautiful smile." ~Kristin Chenoweth in her last performance of the song "Popular"

I'll add Frenchie Davis to the list. And I haven't seen a Motormouth Maybelle yet that I haven't thought was wonderful, although I'm very reluctant about Queen Latifah. She just doesn't do it for me the way she does it for everybod else.

Mattbrain:

Ken Page starred on Broadway in Aint Misbehavin, The Wiz, Cats, etc. You might know him from the film version "Torch Song Trilogy" where he's Murray, one of the drag divas. He's also done some wonderful voice work for animated films like "All Dogs Go to Heaven" and "Nightmare Before Christmas." And yes, he's practically a big, brassy black woman. You'd love him.

In that same vein, I saw The Wiz in La Jolla a couple of weeks ago and the divaesque Titus Burgess should make the list now too. MEOW.

Darlene Love! LOVE!
...What happened next, was stranger still, a woman breathless and afraid, appeared out of the night, completely dressed in white. She had a secret she would tell, of one who had mistreated her. Her face and frightened gaze, my mind cannot erase...But then she ran from view. She looked so much like you...

This is a very odd thread.

That said, Darlene Love is about 4'11" and 98 lbs.

Crystal Monee Hall in Rent. Frenchie's great, but Crystal is a much better Soloist and Bag Lady than Frenchie is.

I think the worst "Big Black" moment is in RAGTIME at Sarah's funeral. That anthem is soooo overwraught.

Hook: I mentioned Sharon W. i was sad that Lillias was out when I saw The Life, but Sharon was so amazing I quickly got over it.

Husk: I loved loved loved lynn Thigpen and was so sad when she died so young. I didnKt mention her because I knew her best as an underated character actress in film. I need to check out Working again.

re: Let a BIG BLACK WOMAN stop the show!

This is kinda off topic but my boyfriend and I are always joking how the "big black lady who stops the show" in Martin Short's show and "Trix" from Drowsy could be played by the same person except both of their big parts are at the end.
