Marin Mazzie? I'd see that, personally.
I vote Donna Murphy. :)
She was at opening night.
Scoping things out, no?

Donna Murphy with Kristen Bell replacing Leigh Ann Larkin :)
The show won't run past LuPone.
Donna Murphy would be ideal casting, but she'd never replace.
But my GYPSY dream?
Tonya Pinkins as Rose, Anika Noni Rose as Louise, and Nikki James as June.
The show will close. But worry not, there will be another revival in another 3 yrs.
Bebe would be miscast, but I'd sure see it. She's a more than competent actress. Though I doubt she'd do a job of making the audience love Mama Rose.
I would personally love to see LaChanze take on the role.
I love Bebe, but I think she would be a train wreck.
My Dream(s) for Rose:
Donna Murphy, Lillias White or Mary Bond Davis
Something Wicked that would be a great cast! I would love to see that happen some day. And as many have already said this show closes with Patti.

Cyndi could easily sing it the way it's meant to be sung.
Pick up her album AT LAST to prove it to yourself.
Am I the only one who wants to see an all-black Gypsy? I think it would add extra weight to Rose's despair.
Rose: Patti LaBelle
Louise: Anika Noni Rose
Herbie: Jamie Foxx
June: Rebecca Naomi Jones
Tulsa: Chester Gregory II
SomethingWicked,
Your casting made me pee.
...in a good way.
And as for Donna Murphy - i'd kill to see that.
I'd love to see Victoria Clark or Christine Ebersole as Rose.

Can we talk about Arthur Laurents?
I really liked this production of Gypsy. LuPone, Gaines and Benanti were all TERRIFIC.
However, the staging belongs to Jerome Robbins. This new production, for which Laurents was nominated for a Tony, is basically Robbins' staging. It's tweaked, but it is in no way, shape or form reinvented.
I would think and expect it close once la LuPone leaves.
I second Christine Ebersol or Donna Murphy as Rose.
Just to shed some light on the Donna Murphy rumors, I did speak to her at Opening Night during intermission and she expressed that she would kill to play this role on broadway. It is in fact her dream role. Would she replace Patti? No. As I stated before, I believe this show will close when Patti decides not to renew/contract ends.

It just has to be said/asked as it was never mentioned in this thread...
Liza?
Ziggy-
There is so much more to being a director than JUST blocking!

An all-black cast is historically inaccurate. These were real people that we have the memory of preserved on film forever. Hell, June Havoc is still alive and well (and NOT living in Paris - sorry, bad joke, I know). It's the same reason we can't have an all-black THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK or a white Thurgood. We know what they looked like. We know their backgrounds.
See what I'm saying?
yeah, well it could be an interesting choice for experimental theatre, but maybe not for broadway per se.
No, I don't. This story may be about real people, but it has nothing to do with race (I guess if they were Chinese then the restaurant scene might be awkward).
