for the record, much tightening took place between the first preview and opening.
Enough that I hope anyone could be respectful enough to refrain from using the word crap to describe it.

#28re: LimelightMike's Quick Thoughts on A CATERED AFFAIR
Posted: 4/22/08 at 4:44pmI'm sure I will see it at least one more time (last performance) to form another opinion of the show. "Crap" was a bit harsh I guess..."tuneless nothing" describes it better.

Ugh.
WAT, I love ya, man...
The fact that our opinions clash so-much-so on this piece makes me feel all the more connected, in some weird way. Haha!

I have to admit -- you've got me interested now
I can't see anything till June, but I am definitely there then
Thanks for the thoughtful, well-written review

Posted: 4/22/08 at 8:12pmMike I've got two questions for you. Has there been a show in the recent past that you've seen that you didn't like? And what do you do for a living, as 21 year old (I think), that you can afford to buy premium seats to nearly every show you see (including Cry-Baby?!?!) Not trying to sound like I'm interrogating you, but just some things I've been wondering for a while.

Posted: 4/22/08 at 11:21pmMike... Look's like we have the same taste in seats, because C 107 is exactly where I'll be sitting this weekend. I've been really looking forward to ACA and even more now since reading your review of the show.

I was there last night too. After reading your review I can't believe that we saw the same show. The audience didn't seem to like it very much at all. They gave a very lukewarm, polite ovation at the end and stayed in their seats until Faith Prince took her last bow (which I NEVER see nowadays). Everyone around me was complaining about how much they disliked it. A man behind me was literally snoring.
I'm just saying what happened where I was sitting lol. And this is just my opinion. I really thought that the show was just terrible. Ninety minutes of boring ballads that all sound identical to each other is just too much. And I really do like Fierstein. Honestly, I do. This show just wasn't for me at all. I'm glad that some people are moved by it though. I mean that.

I just got back from my second time...
...it's even better the second time!!
I'm still shaken by it.
I start crying the minute I smell the eggs.

i loved the whole look & feel of the show.
i thought the design was very beautiful; i felt like i was in a Will Eisner story!
the songs themselves seemed to be going over my head, but i am sure i will appreciate them more when i listen to the cast recording.
but what i *do* appreciate is that the show has the dignity & respect to treat the audience as adults.
& the strength to be earnest; not hide its heart behind irony.

I so agree Norn! Except for some stupid audience members that should just stay home and pander themselves...it doesn't pander to the rest of us!
Upon hearing the score a second time, I was better able to follow the connections.
I love how the entire show just flows...the music, sets, scenes and emotions.
Very subtle. Painterly.

I'm sticking with my guns, Tommy...
This one's goin' for 'the big prize'
Sure, SOME critics didn't 'get it' and that's FINE.
It'll have some stiff competition with 'the two big dogs'
I know STEW and the Crew and Manny and his bunch are
gunning for the same recognition and esteem come June 15.
Time, my friends, will tell...
I hope to take my entire family to see it for my 2nd time.
My sister continues to rave to co-workers.
let it be known.
Best,
- Mike

They've stuffed the playbill with the Post rave as well as the poster outside of the theatre...
If it just wasn't Barnes...it would be a good move.
But the tourists that love the film, it might work...(The couple next to me came for that reason, yet wouldn't stop talking and fishing through purses and crap--their fav show was BOY FROM OZ, until they saw JERSEY BOISE the night before!)
The kinda liked this, I think...
*sigh*

& the woman unwrapping her easter basket!
(well, it sounded like it!)
& those people who were LAUGHING during scenes that were clearly *not* funny.

Yeah, the lady next to me...
purse bitch. and hubby. Thought quiet moments meant it was time to chat. Or read.
Going to the theatre is more and more like flying coach. Tooo much baggage...and small seats.
Yet no overhead compartment to store the crap (just go back to the hotel, bitch) or emergency exits to throw them out!
Even if it means the death of us all!
