I have searched through lots of older threads on this topic, and several posters were kind enough to post links to the Theater on Film and Tape archive list, which I have followed in the past. Unfortunately, in trying to follow them recently, I keep getting the error message "Ruby (Rack) application could not be started", so it seems that the NYPL website has changed since those links were posted. I can find the TOFT homepage and NYPL catalog, but I have not been able to find the list of TOFT items that I have seen in those links, despite searching for more than an hour.
Does anyone know where those lists can now be found, since the website was changed? Thanks in advance for any help!

I don't think there's a single list of all the videos available, but you should be able to find whether something is available or not just by using the library's basic search feature. Hope this helps.
If helps if you include "videorecording" or "video recording" (with or without the space, I can't remember which is better) with the title you're looking for on the NYPL website.

The best way to look up videos in the Theatre on Film and Tape Archive (TOFT) at Lincoln Center is through using the "classic" version of the NYPL's online catalog, at this URL:
http://catalog.nypl.org/
Use the drop-down menu to go to Call Number, and then type in the letters NCOV. Hit "enter," and you'll get a list of 3,059 videos of stage shows held by the library. That's not all of the collection, but it's everything that's been cataloged thus far. For information on material that hasn't been cataloged yet, call the TOFT screening room at (212) 870-1642.
I work at the library, and can answer any follow-up questions on this.
Like the OP said, I know there have been many threads on this, but does anyone know when you actually get to the library what section the tapes are in and who actually provides the permission for you to view it?

The videos can be viewed in the Lucille Lortel Room on the third floor. (They can't be removed from the building.)
Some of the videos require advance permission to view, but most do not. Permission requirements vary. You'll need to ask at the desk about the requirements for a specific video.

You have to go up to the third floor archives. There's a room in the back of the archives where you watch the videos- you never actually handle the tape/DVD. Whoever's working at the desk will give you permission to watch, but you have to give them a specific reason for viewing.

Just to clarify my earlier post: yes, you need a specific research purpose to view ANY video in the collection. But some videos require special permission, which usually involves contacting someone in advance. (For example, all videos taped at the Brooklyn Academy of Music require advance permission from BAM before viewing.) And information on getting those permissions is available from staff in the Lortel Room.
That's very nice of you to offer such helpful information and assistance, cmorrow.
I haven't used the library in years, but it's nice to know the staff is still as helpful and friendly as it was when I was younger and used it frequently.
Thank you for the responses and information!

I'd just like to add, for those who may be wondering, that the Performing Arts Library re-opened today for the first time since the storm. Hours today and tomorrow are 11 AM to 5 PM. On Saturday it is hoped that hours will return to normal.
Those who already had appointments to watch TOFT videos in the Lucille Lortel Room today, tomorrow, or Saturday, may do so. Because of limited staffing, walk-in appointments will probably not resume until next week.
