Is it of the old movie or the musical?

The article doesn't specify whether it will be the musical or not.
The headline says, "Little Shop of Horrors" while the article says "The Little Shop of Horrors."

Article titles abbreviate all the time. It's not going to be the musical.
Most however will be familiar with the Frank Oz-directed 1986 remake which based itself on the Ashman/Menken off-Broadway musical version.
O'Brien's take will be different again - "I have a take on it you're not going to expect. I'm taking it in a different direction, let's put it that way."

Posted: 4/16/09 at 5:25pmMaybe it will be a silent film. Or a silent porn film! The way porn was meant to be made. Silent with auto fast-forwarding through all the dialogue scenes. I am so there!

Posted: 4/16/09 at 5:33pmI wish they'd just release the musical with the original ending and the extended version of "The Meek Shall Inherit" already. Jeesh!

Posted: 4/16/09 at 5:34pmI know! Who is the person that has kept it from being released, and is it in their will, too?

Ha. I thought it was David Geffen. The story was that the original dvd release was recalled because he was the only one with the finished version of the ending and that he was going to eventually rerelease it, but that was like ten years ago.

Posted: 4/16/09 at 5:45pmI don't think so, TimeSquare. That whole subplot was pretty much dropped. I think the only songs filmed and cut were the finale and the middle section of "The Meek Shall Inherit."

Posted: 4/16/09 at 5:46pmI'm not sure how I feel about this. I'm a huge Little Shop fan and like it the way it is. This guy's talking about making it dark. How do you make a movie about a talking plant dark? I hope the answer isn't to just add more blood. That would be stupid. To me, Little Shop HAS to have camp, or else it just becomes boring. Oh well, I guess I'll wait and see how it turns out before I start making assumptions! (Oh, and if the plant is CGI, I'll be highly let down.)

I'm all in favour of a claymation plant for that classic-movie feel.
Oh, and if this were a remake of the musical, how about Seth McFarlane in multiple roles?

Neil Patrick Harris as Seymour?
Nathan Lane as Mushnik?
Scarlett Johannson as Audrey?
Jim Carrey as Orin?
No? No?

The real problem with the musical version of Little Shop (the stage version and even entertaining a movie remake) is Ellen Greene. No one has ever been able to wrest that role from her hands; her performance was too iconic.
Rerelease it with the original ending already!

I actually loved Kerry Butler in the revival, Phyll. She can't hold a candle to Greene, but she made the role her own and didn't just try to do an Ellen Greene impression. Though she didn't "wrest the role from her hands", I think she did an admirable job.
I REALLY would have loved to see Kristin Chenoweth in that part around five years ago.
