Anyone going tonight? Make sure to let us know how it goes!
I'm rushing the Saturday matinee. I dunno much about the show, but I've been listening to the CD and I really like a lot of the songs. it's not everyday a tour launches here in San Diego so that's exciting. and with all the buzz the show got around here from the fire I think it's going to be very interesting...

I'm anxious to see some reviews. I saw the show on Broadway and loved it. I'm taking my mother to see the tour in November. I can't wait to hear how the tour cast is.

I didn't know the civic theatre did a rush! What are the deatils of it?
I am going for Sunday's matinee. I am so glad that half price tickets are available (I am sooooo poor!).
Here is the link to the 1/2 price tickets:

I'm also going to the Sunday matinee......great orchestra seats!
I get so excited when I find out that some of you on the boards are from SD! I always feel like the lone theater geek in this town.
your def not alone! I am huge theater geek from San Diego. But I'm moving to New York in two weeks. I want to see it, but I don't think I even have enough money for rush tickets.
Yeah I'd love to hear some reviews of the tour. I'm thinking about getting tickets for when the tour comes to Costa Mesa but I'm not sure if it'd be worth the money or not.....

Hi, I just joined after lurking for quite some time. I just got home from seeing the show and decided to join so I could share my experience with all of you wonderful people! I didn't see the show in NY but had listened to the cast recording, so I was familiar with the music. The show itself is probably best described as "cute." Not as cheesy as I had imagined, but I felt it might be suited to a more intimate environment. However, I did enjoy myself. The show started off a little cheesy and quaint for me, but the second act was much better. Kate Fisher as Jo truly was astonishing. I am a diehard Sutton fan but this girl did an amazing job, especially with "Astonishing." Whereas Sutton belted the hell out of it, Kate did it mostly in her mix, which I felt really worked. She was gorgeous, and reminded me a lot of Winona Ryder, which was neither bad not good, it just took a while to get past. All of the sisters were good as well. Gwen Hollander as Amy was just bratty enough, but still lovable, and her voice was so much more pleasant than you-know-who on the OCR. Renee Brna, who played Meg had a lovely legit voice that she got to show off with "More Than I Am." Autumn Hurlbert did an excellent job at creating a Beth with strength, which isn't always done. Maureen Mcgovern is a lovely prescence. I had not seen her in anything else, and I was not sure if I was exactly in love with her voice, as it seems a little affected at times. Her performance tonight was honest and sincere, however. Andrew Varela as Professore Bhaer turned in a great performance all around and has a beautiful powerful voice. Stephen Patterson was cute as Laurie and has a nice voice, but he seemed to stand around and look goofy a lot. I think the fault is more with the book than him, though. Overall, the performances were outstanding, but I was not overwhelmed with the material. The book is fairly faithful to the book, and the songs worked better on stage than on cd. I just feel that this is maybe more suited to smaller venues, such as community or regional theaters. That said, I had an enjoyable night at the theater, and this is worth a trip if it is coming near you. And all you in SD, please take advantage of the rush tickets. At $10 or $30, it's definitely worth it.
congrats on having the courage to join us! thanks for the review. I can't wait to see it tomorrow. listening to the CD I too have been thinking that the show is probably better suited to a smaller venue which the civic theatre is not so I imagine it's not going to be the ideal environment. thank you for referring to the CD as the CAST RECORDING and not a soundtrack... have you been lurking??? it seems you did your homework.

uggggg Muscle your subtletly is APPALLING!
thanks for the review shoe, I am looking forward to it tomorrow.......
cute will be fine...I love the music, and I am not expecting more than any of the three (I think there were three) movies done of the book, and I love them all.....
keggs, you are not alone......there are even some of us in Palm Springs......
gah! I'm back from the matinee. I really don't know what to say. the show is awesome. the sets and costumes and lighting are so elaborate and gorgeous. very easily one of the best touring sets I've seen in a while. are they the same exact ones from Broadway or have they been built smaller? if they were you'd never know it these sets were amazing. the first time the attic came down from the flies and the lights lit the back of it... that was gorgeous and all the elaborate curtains and furnishings... ugh... I could talk about the sets forever, but I won't.
the performances were all really spectacular. Kate didn't belt her songs as much as Sutton does which was a bit of a drawback because for the first twenty minutes or so I think they were having volume issues with the sound because I could barely hear some things and I was in row P of the orchestra so, yeah, but it got better as the show went on. "Astonishing" was awesome. I guess I was kind of expecting something a little more cheesy, but the book was really not at all, except for the whole "forever!" stuff, but some parts were quite moving, for instance the scene on the beach, and they were aided by these beautiful songs.
with Sutton out Maureen McGovern is the real star here, in fact I'll bet she was on Broadway too. her performance this afternoon was just incredible. she had some well deserved entrance applause and by the end of her first song the audience was in love with her. the stage got brighter every time she stepped on. "Days of Plenty" was a real showstopper and you could tell she was putting her soul into it. such a great performer and an amazing show. if you're having doubts, stop it. go see it.

Trust me, Maureen barely existed in the Broadway company. Sutton manages to eat up everybody else she shares the stage with.
yeah for Gwen H!! I was in acting class with her when I was like 15.. she was in college and a very sweet girl. I am very happy for her.

I'm so glad Kate is doing a great job! I was worried because people kept saying that without Sutton there would be no show. I never believed myself since I THOROUGLY enjoyed the show, but I always had that nagging doubt.
Now to decide whether or not I should see it when it comes to these here parts.
