7 shows in 5 day.....cant wait for our May trip. I have all my shows picked out (Comet, DEH, 6 degrees, Ground hog day, Sweeney Todd, Bandstand) .....this is the last decision that needs to be made. Both these shows have major star power, both have stories from roughly the same time period (I think) I am unfamiliar with the shows other than what I have read online. Which one would you pick?? Is there anything to distinguish these from each other than personal preference?? I don't know how to decide between these two? HELP :).
The Little Foxes is a great play that holds up surprisingly well (I just saw the Arena Stage production in Washington, which was excellent), but I'm not thrilled with the casting of either leading lady. A Doll's House, Part 2 is a totally unknown entity at this point, but the cast is fabulous. If I had to choose, I'd probably take A Doll's House, Part 2.
Like AC said, Doll's House is very much unknown. In previous plays, Hnath has done a lot to subvert expectations. I think it's very unlikely this play is going to be a straightforward sequel to A Doll's House... and sort of ironic tittle sort of reinforces that. His plays are often very brief and fairly post-modern.
The Little Foxes is an extremely well-written 3 act play. It's long and slow, but can be very exciting. It's an American classic which remains surprisingly relevant when done well. There was an EXCEPTIONAL production at The Goodman Theater in Chicago and it didn't wheeze or creak at all.
It really depends on what kind of play you like and if you're willing to take a risk... and which cast of celebrities is more appealing to you.
How did I completely forget about that Goodman production of The Little Foxes? I saw it when I was in town for work last year and it was superb. Shannon Cochran was amazing as Regina. It really is a fantastic play that has remained tragically relevant.

Interesting comments. KJ it sounds like you maybe don't expect Doll House to be linear. (I'm not a theater insider or expert so I'm sure that's not the right term but hope you know what I mean?) I think I prefer something straightforward.
On our first visit to NY we saw Denzel in Julius Caesar.....I was expecting a classic tale, but instead got men running around with brief cases....what?? haha....ya I didn't get it. Is that what you mean by post modern?

AC did you just cast 2 votes here, one each way? hahaha.....all good :) One of the issues is Little foxes have tickets onsale now and already there are not many left for the day I have it planned for. Doll House part 2 tickets aren't onsale yet, so I feel if its Little foxes, I should nab tickets now before its too late ![]()
I'm going to see both productions myself, but if I could only choose one, I'd still go with A Doll's House. That's partly because I've seen two good productions of The Little Foxes in less than 2 years, and partly because I'm not sold on the casting.
Both wonderful actresses in THE LITTLE FOXES are miscast (as Regina). I'd go with DOLLS HOUSE 2. Its a brand new work -- that almost always trumps a revival for me.
Since it's a new play, we really don't know what it's going to be like.
I recently had to make the same choice... and chose The Little Foxes. The Little Foxes is one of my very favorite plays and I adore Laura Linney. I agree that they seem to have cast two Birdie's.. but we'll see!
