What was most interesting, in a night of fascinating stories, was how she prepared to play Sally Bowles. She didn't go back to the Isherwood stories or to the script...she went to her father. His advice: You're too good to be singing in a place like the Kit Kat Klub...so you must be there by choice. Because it makes you interesting and extraordinary...and that's what Sally Bowles wants to be.
And that's how I always felt about her performance as Sally. Many say she's just too good a singer/performer to be in that club. But I always felt she played it as if it were her choice.
Another interesting story about MAYBE THIS TIME. Fosse said to her, 'Why should I put this song in the film? You sing the hell out of it...why would you still be in that club.' And she said, 'What if no one is there to see it.' Lord knows what's true and what's embellished by now. But as Liza said about memories: They're your memories. Rewrite them if you don't like them.
