I'm thrilled to bits that I'll be hearing Liza perform in concert this Thursday, March 3rd here in Austin. I'm not familiar with how she runs her concerts. What should I expect? In any case, it will be an experience I will never forget. from Roman in Austin, Texas.... (NYC: March 15-1

Don't be surprised if this concert gets canceled.
Killjoy! For those of you who have recently attended a Liza concert, what is her personal approach? Is it mostly just songs? Does she go down memory lane? I just want to have a rough idea about what I might see in a concert of hers. from RC in Austin, Texas
I've seen her twice in the past two years. Whatever material she chooses to do, she will give 110%. She does her best known songs as well as some of the Kay Thompson material from Liza's At The Palace.
I'm not sure if it is a stage persona or the real Liza, bur she is very effusively warm towards the audience and is very transparent emotionally, telling stories and interacting with the audience. Both times she would sit and catch her breath, telling a story or chatting.
The audience adored her and was equally loving even though the voice is not what it once was. Even those shes not hitting the same notes she is selling and acting every song and is a performer at heart. She loves performing.
It is a treat to see her live. She is a living legend. Enjoy!
I have seen Liza live 3x, and she always shows up. One of those times though, she took a long break in between songs and had that little kid Nicholas King do about 5 songs and the people in the audience were pissed off, but then she finally returned and finished her concert. It was soooo strange. There were no announcements or anything.

How was the concert? I did hear she was not well in the beginning of the week so I hope you did get to see her.
Heyyyy.... I'm so tired... played three tennis matches today in a tournament. But enought about me...let's talk about me. : )
Last night was a wonderful (mostly) experience listening to Liza. She started off with "Alexander's Ragtime Band"...and ended with "New York, New York". There was one encore, but I can't remember the song. She did fairly well with the what I call the "low note" songs. There were some significant and challenging moments when she was doing "Cabaret" and "New York, New York." There are some high notes in those songs, obviously. Honestly, it was excruciating to hear her try to sustain those specific notes. Bless her heart, she did try. Throughout the concert, she was having throat problems...with the dry Austin air. Overall, it was a blast! She had the audience in the palm of her hands. I did notice that she "segmented" her high notes. I don't know the technical term for that...but I did notice it. The revelation of the evening was Billy Stritch's amazing voice! I had no idea. They did do a duet. It was charming. I glad I went to see Liza, despite some of her vocal challenges. from rC in Austin, Texas....ready for NYC (March 15-1
. Hopefully, I can get the a.o.k from a specialist I'm seeing next week...something "inguinal". Keeping my fingers crossed.

Glad you got the chance to see her. She is the ultimate pro. She definitely should stay away from those belting signature songs. Her voice just can't sustain those notes anymore and it is painful to watch. She does better on the slower ballad type songs sung in a lower range. She is such a showman(woman) though from the old school of entertaining. You should have seen her in her prime. She was fantastic. There was no one like her. "Liza At The Winter Garden" is still one of my favorite nights on Broadway.
Love her, but it is getting more and more painful to watch her struggle.
She may not have the voice anymore, but she still can "Wow" an audience with her persona and energy. Glad you enjoyed yourself!
No one's considered transposing the songs for her? Seriously? I mean, not that I don't enjoy that she's still trying, but if it's exruciating, it won't kill her to take it down a key and still deliver a fabulous performance.
The keys she sang in on her last album were good. It was a tasteful and appealing album. I enjoyed it.
I had a thought. Maybe she could do a video segment during her "Cabaret" and "New York New York" numbers? She could sing along the notes she does well and let her "younger" Liza handle those difficult high notes. I mean, it's not the ideal of situations, but it would be an improvement and highlight Liza when her voice was in top form. from RC in Austin, Texas...
(Hopefully) Going to NYC from March 15-18 (Wicked, Lombardi, Priscilla, Chicago).
Everyone should see Liza live at least once--there is no one and nothing like the energy that surges out of her and engulfs everyone in the audience...and nothing like the pizazz and bazzaz and razzmatazz and all that jazz she will emanate to the moment of her very last breath.
BUT...
Everyone should ALSO watch or rewatch or re-re-re-re-watch "Liza with a Z," and remember what she was like at her peak.
Some great artists get even greater as they grow older, like Rosemary Clooney or Barbara Cook or Meryl Streep. Others don't.
Joey...she sang that song in the concert. She did a good turn in that song. RC P.S. I would love to meet with at least one BWW LEgend when I'm in town. Sewiously.
