As someone who's a pretty big Andrew Lloyd Webber fan, I have to say that bwayfan took the words right out of my mouth. Looking on his body of work, I really don't think he has a masterpiece but his best is Evita. No question.
I love all his shows: Sunset, Joseph, Aspects, etc. But probably I have to agree that Evita is his masterpiece.
I also enjoyed his latest groundbreaking shows like Bombay Dreams(although the lyrics weren't his) and The Woman in White.
He also didn't compose Bombay Dreams. That was A.R Rahman. Lloyd Webber produced it.
I meant *compose*, but it was his production and it was groundbreaking, I had never seen anything like that before or after.
Did I forget to mention the wonderful Song&Dance?!!! The only semi one-woman show I have ever enjoyed due to that glorious score and excellent plot?

"Unexpected Song" is pretty glorious from Song & Dance, but then for his best musical I think JCS with "Heaven on their Minds" yet then I admire Sunset Boulevard's entr'acte, and I'm fond of songs in Evita like "I'd Be Surprisingly Good for You"...
so why pick one...
nah, can't do it
It's without a doubt Starlight Express. Just kidding.
I think Phantom of the Opera IS his masterpiece. I think it's what will define him 100 years from now.
I know many will call that score rubbish - I've heard the arguments for years, however, I agree that the show has found it's place comfortably in musical history.
I also believe Evita and JCS are right behind it.
Aspects of Love has a great score but the actual story is dead weight.
I wonder how time will treat Sunset Blvd.

I'll often listen to Evita and have to remind myself that it is, in fact, a Lloyd Webber score. I have come to associate his music as either so repetitive or disconnected as a score that Evita really stands alone, I think.
I also enjoy Joseph for about the first ten minutes, and then remember that it's one of, if not THE, most monotonous musical ever created.
Evita, followed closely by Jesus Christ Superstar, Aspects of Love and Sunset Boulevard.
