Posted: 10/7/04 at 12:51pmI seem to remember reading that somewhere as well, Robbie. Isn't she mentioned in "But Darling I'm Your Auntie Mame" (mine's at home and I'm at work)?

Posted: 10/7/04 at 1:05pmI believe so. I love that book...it's a little too much a fan letter...and I would have LOVED more dish...but for anyone who loves that 'madcap aunt', it's a must!

Again, just because Kristin played the part does not mean she played it well. I admit that I forgot about her performance in "The Music Man." No, she did not have the "Ditz" tone. However, I found her to be stiff to the point that it just did not seem real. I still cannot see her as Gooch. In the roles that I have seen Kristin play, she is not shy, and I cannot see why people believe she would make a good Gooch. Would someone try to explain???
As for not seeing Donna Murphy as Mame, I almost understand that if you did not catch her in "The King and I" or "Wonderful Town." If the only show I'd seen her in was "Passion" then I probably could not have seen her as Ruth Sherwood. Perhaps that is the reason you can't see her as Mame.

But you can't blame them.
Only about 13 people caught Donna in WT.

Posted: 10/7/04 at 5:06pmThis does not need to become another Donna bashing thread. Just because some people are bitter that they missed her in "Wondeful Town" does not mean that she wasn't beyond wonderful in the show or that she isn't a phenomenal actress, which so few performers are these days.

#56re: Longing for a revival of Mame
Posted: 10/7/04 at 5:14pmA rather poor joke in my mind.

Posted: 10/7/04 at 9:47pmGinger Rogers played Mame on the West End. I believe the show closed when she left.

Dollypop,
You are 100% CORRECT about Ginger and West End Production.
Garland Note: After Judy lost part in NYC, she tried to convince West End Management she could handle 8 performances a week and be reliable. They said no. Again, Judy was crushed.

Posted: 10/7/04 at 11:28pmI still think Harriet Harris would be great.
#65re: Longing for a revival of Mame
Posted: 10/7/04 at 11:32pmI think Harris would be fine too; but she doesn't have the name required to make the investment to mount an expensive show like MAME. (As MAME takes place between 1928 and 1948; there are NUMEROUS changes in sets and costumes. If show looks "cheezy," it defeats whole purpose of Mame's Glamerous Lifestyle.)
