Hello everyone, I'm hoping you can help me out. I'm performing a theatrical vocal for my talent portion of a scholarship program in a few months and am struggling to find the perfect songs. It needs to be something that isn't over done so I'm avoiding songs from Wicked and Les Mis.
I want something that I can really act out and play up. I am an alto and would love a song I can really belt or something that is upbeat and fun. It also doesn't have to be from Broadway!
Songs I'm considering: I want to go to Hollywood, Fly Into the Future, Gimme Gimme, They Just keep Moving the Line (from SMASH)
Thank you so much for any guidance you can offer!

But seriously, remember to pick a piece that is appropriate for you and the pageant. Also, make sure the song works well "out of context" from the musical. It may be a showstopper in the show, but standing alone, does not work well.
I presume "I'm Just A Girl Who Caint Say No" would be inappropriate for a pageant.
Rather than Gimme Gimmee - why not Astonishing from Little Women, if it's not too high. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSanYf07st8 or "Blow Gabriel Blow"?
If you do it tongue in cheek, Kander and Ebb "Applause" Lauren Bacall was deep alto.

My advice is that "Gimme Gimme" is super overdone.
I like the idea of "They Just Keep Moving the Line" if it works for your voice. I don't know your range but I'd also consider "How Can I Wait" from Paint Your Wagon and "Gorgeous" from The Apple Tree. But pageants are a little different from auditions. They likely won't be hearing as many performers so I wouldn't worry as much about doing something really unique. Pick something you like and know well that will show off your voice.
As a long-time pageant judge, please do not perform Gimme Gimme or Astonishing -- VERY overdone!
