There is talk of Germany, but it won't make it to Broadway. Too much money has been lost already.

>>> Will it ever come to broadway? or the US? <<<

I hope not! When I went to England a year ago, they were showing it and I decided to see Billy Elliot instead. I don't understand why the Brits are in a cinema to show trend! Next up Calendar Girls! (and no, I'm not kidding!)

BUT, Billy Elliot was from a movie but that show is awesome!

I once heard someone describe her (Ruthie Henshall) singing as sounding as though she's trying to swallow a whole meatball slightly larger than her windpipe. (The same person compared Michael Ball's singing to sounding as though he's sitting on a washing machine on spin cycle and Colm Wilkinson's to a man with a paralyzed lip trying to eat cottage cheese.) --- Schmerg_The_Impaler

The show lost far too much money in Toronto and London to be considered for Broadway. Not being a huge fan of the books or films, I had very low expectations when my boyfriend dragged me to see it in London and I was pleasantly surprised. Some of the staging was a bit sloppy or over-the-top, but I found it very entertaining and the score was quite beautiful. I left feeling very happy I had the opportunity to see it.

WTF? 'Lord of the Rings' was a BOOK before it was ever a movie, and the musical was based much more on the book than the film (albeit with all the good characters mercilessly cut out so they could make it run under five hours). And don't misrepresent 'Calendar Girls'; it's a play, not a musical. Oh, and that too was something else before it was a movie. Fancy that!

Amen Weez.

It's also not just the Brits, we're doing it in the US too, or did Legally Blonde, Mary Poppins, Spamalot, Little Mermaid, Lion King, Grey Gardens (Act II), Cry-Baby, Hairspray, and Shrek slip your mind?

Honestly, I love the score and pictures that I've seen, I'd *kill* to have seen more.

I loved it. I saw it 4 times including closing night.

I read somewhere that people who love the book will hate it, people who love the film will really hate it and people who haven't read the book or seen the film will love it. I am definitely in the last camp.

It was such a huge show, it filled the Theatre Royal.

I don't know if it will be seen again, I hope Germany happens but I am certain Broadway won't, not in its current form anyway

Saw LOTR in Toronto and loved it.

As for CALENDER GIRLS I actually think it'd be fun as a musical.

I agree, those were books BUT, do you think they bothered putting LOTR and Calendar Girls on stage strictly because of the books??? And they have a few more shows opening, or in the process of productions that were from films (books don't matter! People don't read!)

Em...the movie to musical population in the West End is not in the same league as Broadway.

Add 9 to 5 and Spider-Man to the list husk_charmer, although the latter could be argued that it's based on the comic book.

Lord of the Rings was in preparation before the films came out, so yes, it was the book that inspired it. Maybe if they had taken notice of the films it would have been a slightly more focused show. I saw it twice in London and my problem with it was that they would skip over huge amounts of plot and then have a beautifully-staged 10 minute sequence which told us absolutely nothing - in a way it was the opposite of the books (which tell you everything in coma-inducing detail)!

The show is going to Germany and a UK tour was mentioned at the time of the West End production closing, but I don't think any breath should be held for the latter any time soon... re: Lord of the Rings

LotteTBS138 what are you talking about?

LOTR started life in Toronto and its not like us Brits went running to see the show when it opened in the UK, the show flopped and lost all of its money.

Films have been turned in to musicals since as far back as the 40s, and do you know where most of the screen to stage musicals have come from.....America

I can only wish it would make it to this country in some form or another. I fell in love with the recording with it's lush score and great vocals and made a special trip with the boy friend over to London in March to see the show. It was amazing staging, but did get a little muddled in the middle. If you haven't heard the CD get it, it's fantastic.

Books don't matter! people don't read!

I'd be inclined to agree with even the sarcasm of that statement if you were talking about something other than a book that has sold more than 150 million copies.

I have the cast recording, and I think the score is beautiful. It is a pity the show didn't do better in Canada and UK. Maybe someday things will change and the show can have a Broadway run. Sure things have been bad for the show, but I am not totally giving up hope. I think the show might have a future in a concert version.
