LOVE NEVER DIES - Adelphi Theatre, London 2010

Well, the four or five "phans" ALW thinks were writing all of the uncomplimentary things during previews (and called "sad") sadly took up a few of the nooses not being used by audience members and waited for him at the stage door. They were disappointed, however. He left by another exit.

Really? They actually went to the stage door to harangue ALW? That's kind of proved his point - it's not normal behaviour...

"Who keeps a gun lying around on their piano?"

The Lord kept a cat on top of his piano.

My guess is that the gun was left during rehearsals. The members of the cast could use it freely as they were loosing the will to live. Either that, or an upset investor hoped one of the writers might make tke the hint.

I think that I was unduely harsh about the show, well at least the score. The CD actually isn't half bad, and makes a LOT more sense than the stage show IMO. Somewhere between recording and opening something's gone wrong - there's explanatory bits snipped away from the score onstage, that would at least help us to understand what's going on, and Sally Dexter is a LOT better than Liz Robertson, who I thought was just rubbish with all that bizarre hand waving in the prologue. And Scarlett Strallen on CD at least seems to be distraught by the start of Act 2, rather than onstage where she goes bananas at the end without a word of warning. Granted the story is pretty light on the ground on both the CD and stage, and the leitmotifs get a bit repetitive (I think it's beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, oh god almighty), and the three ballads in a row in Act I are painful, but the stage production itself seems to have lost it totally, and shoved in robot medusas and keyboard-playing monkeys to compensate!

To be fair, its not like its a minor thing. Im sure if Crawford had to have Key Hole surgery he would have missed shows. And he was hardly reliable when in WIW.

Princeton - you beat me to it... wasn't the whole reason Michael Ball came into WIW because of Crawford's illnesses?

BTW - hate to ask - what's key hole surgery?

Don't understand what your comment is supposed to mean. Is this a dig at Ramin for being rushed to hospital. Ramin would never go off unless it's serious. And Crawford missed loads as Phantom in London. From what I remember he was off not too long into the run and Barton had almost a good months run at it. And like others have mentioned, he was unreliable in WIW and was also injured off Star FX. So again, don't know where you were headed with that and if it was a dig at Ramin, it's quite unfair.

Not a medic here but it's where, instead of cutting you wide open, they make small incisions and operate using tiny equipment and small cameras inserted into you.

Crawford missed shows while playing the Phantom but not loads. He, like many performers hated to miss. In the Steve Barton situation, as I remember it, MC was hospitalized with a hiatal hernia. Steve B. (who was the Phantom understudy as well as Raoul) hurt his knee, MC, knowing Steve was a dancer, didn't want him to try to go on with a bad knee, so he got someone to drive him from the hospital to the theater and went on for (don't remember exactly) two or three shows until another understudy could be adequately prepared.

Barton might have taken over the role for a period at another time. I don't know about that.

MC's serious illness in The Woman in White did lead to his having to leave the show. Michael Ball took over on short notice and later played Fosco in NYC for a while. Interestingly, he also got sick (not the same thing as Crawford) and missed a lot of shows--and then WiW closed.

So we can see that serious injuries or illness can lead to people missing shows. I was just wondering why that original comment was made in what seemed to be a response to Ramin having to be forced to miss shows because he was rushed for unplanned surgery. That is not a fault on his integrity or professionalism. He hadn't missed a show for six weeks of the show after months of rehearsal with tech runs and press stuff. He never dropped a preview which some leads sometimes do to rest. But all this could have been misinterpreted on my part but it just seemed weird to post that, especially as it wasn't true in Crawford's case anyway. Illness and injury is never anyone's fault and I think leads can get in it the neck for anything these days because they are in the spotlight. As Ramin said he didn't see this coming obviously it was something he had no control over.

No Swil I thought thae same as you, that they were trying to make a point that Ramin cant hack it, which makes no sense. Its not like he is off with a cold.

And yes Crawford missed a fair few shows in Phantom. SH*T happens, sometimes people just get ill

Yeah Princeton, I thought that too. And you know, even if he was off with a cold, it's been a hectic lead up and run thus far. Ramin is singing probably one of the biggest sings in Musical theatre today and the biggest sing in the show. From what friends who work in the Adelphi say he is built with iron chords. Very consistent, strong and keeps taking risks. I'm surprised he hasn't had a rest day here and there over the first six weeks. Wouldn't blame him. But if someone is trying to have dig at him for unexpected surgery, that's just plain silly. However, I'm sure I took it the wrong way, but like I said, the info given was incorrect anyhow. The original Phantom role seemed to take it's toll on many actors. Sure it is not as big as Mr Y in the amount of singing but it was still intense.

Michael Crawford happened to be 20 odd years older while doing 'Woman In White' and he has a recent history of health problems.
While doing Pahntom in new York he missed a number of shows due to back problems dating back from his days as Frank Spencer in 'Some Mothers Do Have 'Em'. I worked on 'Phantom' in New York for its first 6 months and he had such a struggle to get on some nights but he mostly did. These problems started to become just a slight problem in the last few weeks of the London run.

So I'm a bit late but here's my thoughts anyway.

The book is a dog as I already knew, Christine has Stockholm syndrome or something. Other than that i liked it, the costumes, the lighting, the sound design, the cast, the band were terrific.

Along with ramin being off liz r was off too so understudy for mdme girey who was great.
Ramins understudy dosent have the range and got quite shouty at the top so til I hear you sing was painful. Harry child was on as guestav and was super vocally, can't get over the number of credits the boys have. But why do they need so many?

Sierra was wonderful.

The Americans in front of me seriously loved it, the audience around me seemed to be mostly overseas tourists.

I hate that there was needless dialog tacked on to all but the biggest numbers, strange to go through heaps of songs with no applause.

For all the enjoyable bits it was pretty dull. If meg had murdered Christine properly and then jumped in the sea it would be better, cut out the death bed singing.

Was worth going but I doubt I would again, maybe if I got a good discount once ramin is recovered.

It's a sh
