I attended the student's
Q&A with Patti last night
after her incredible 2-act
show.
Patti: "Andrew Lloyd Webber
will not change keys for anybody...
but Madonna!"
She was discussing the difficult
keys and the strain on her voice
in Evita. And PattiLuPoneFANatic,
I saw you last night, sorry I didn't
get a chance to say hello. Seemed
liked everyone I knew in Dallas was
there. Best show I've seen her do.
She should keep her CouldaWouldaShoulda
concert with piano only. Just brilliant!
What about that 4 song encore? The song
you referred to was "Just the way you look
tonight". "Ladies who lunch" was a huge
surprise...never heard her sing that before.
She needs to record this concert for a
CD or DVD. It's just too good to be left
to reviews and memory.

You saw me and you didn't say "hello"??? (hard slap on the face) : ) I wish you had, because I had the option of taking along one other person to meet Miss Patti. Oh well. RC
Well thanks. Sorry it was crowded
and rushed after the show trying to
get to the Q&A. We met Patti after
that and she was nice enough to sign
my Sunset Boulevard CD. Of course she
was the best thing ALW ever did with
that musical! But she was funny at the
Q&A. Some bozo referred to her show as
"cabaret" and she went off on him. Then
he tried to smooth it over by saying he
read that reference in the local paper.
Patti replied "do you believe everything
you read in the newspaper?!". She did
not like her Coulda Woulda Shoulda concert
being called cabaret by any means. Glad
you made it up. Sorry the weather was so
bitter cold.
i was there last night --- how did you get into the Q&A i am soo jealous
Not sure if her comment was more of a dig at Madonna or ALW... Mind you I can't stand Madonna, but I'd still rather listen to her try and sing the score to Evita any day over listening to Patti LuPone...

Ah! So many BWW-ers were there? I was there. I thought about Patti LuPone FANatic, actually. I was thinking, "He's from Austin and he is obsessed with her... wonder if he's here." :)
My favorite quote from last night was probably, "I'm here in Dallas performing at McFarlin Auditorium! It's like a dream come true!" (or something along those lines).
She was fantastic!
Oh--and who could forget--
*puts arms up for signature Evita pose* (lengthy intro to "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" begins to play) *Patti checks watch*
I teared up a little bit watching her perform the number.
I was there last night, too!
I died laughing when she checked her watch after holding the signature Evita pose! lol
I, too, was pleasantly surprised when she sang "Ladies Who Lunch." But I loved it!
Patti Lupone FANatic...you're from Austin? I'm from Austin!
I was there last night, too!
I was excited. I bought $20 tickets in the second balcony, and we got upgraded to orchestra for free because she didn't sell out! That saved me about $80!
I had a great time. I really loved "Don't Rain on My Parade," "The Ladies who Lunch," "Don't Cry for Me..." and several of the male lead songs ("How to Handle a Woman" "Ya Got Trouble."
Her voice was beautiful. And she was such a breath of fresh air from all the "belters" (ie. screamers). She had controlled power in her voice. I knew she was talented, but I really had time to appreciate it last night.
I do have to say I was disappointed that she didn't sing a single Sweeney song. I was kinda hoping for one. Especially when she said she was starting the Sondheim section....
I really enjoyed the ancedotes and stories she told in the first half, and I wish she would have continued that format in the second half.
It was quite a different event from Bernadette Peters last week (much smaller in scale), but it was a lot of fun.
i too am surprised so many people were there.... it was a wonderful evening.
I was a little disappointed that she didnt sing Anything Goes.... but the ladies who lunch was amazing!!!!! I didnt think she would be too happy to see stage-doorers so i let her have her evening :)
But i will be seeing Gypsy in previews in March... and then many times after that since im moving there in may....
Hope everyone had a great time

Oh, Hermione--I did the same thing!! Well, the first half, I sat in the front row of the balcony and then moved down to the 8th row for the second half :-P.
I, too, wish she had continued the format in the second half.
I thought Patti was much more enjoyable than Bernadette, actually. I think she was more into her show than Bernadette. Bernadette seemed bored of her show and didn't seem very sincere (when she walked back on stage for her encore, she had a straight face while walking on--and then immediate changed to a sort of... fake smile for the audience). Patti was blowing kisses and giving tons of encore songs!
That may just be my opinion though...
I've seen both Patti & Bernadette and I'd have to agree. Bernadette seems rote while Patti is really excited. IMO.
Madonna vs. Patti LuPone singing the
score of Evita???
Well whomever thinks Madonna can get
those keys, do that score better than
LuPone...are definately in a very minority
of personal opinion.
And so glad that type of musical theater
fan found BWW...you're definately in the
right place to post such an opinion.
