"I must disagree about the "some social commentary" thing simply because, what good is social commentary if you're not going to flesh it out? Either explore the issues or don't. Don't tip-toe around them superficially (which is exactly what "Spelling Bee" does)."
It does and it doesn't. It tip-toes around several issues, but I think that it provides a pretty accurate commentary on the priorities of family and education in our society.
"Finally, you saw "Altar Boyz" towards the beginning of the run, and a lot has changed since then. (I wasn't crazy about it at first, either.) But the cast has grown into their roles more- a lot more- and now I would never say that the cast of "Spelling Bee" was stronger. The show is SO much tighter and poignant than it was at the beginning of the run."
This may be true. But it also may be true that when you see a show several times a week you notice more nuances and can appriaciate the smaller details. You're clearly much more familiar with "Altar Boyz" than "Spelling Bee". And don't think for a moment that you didn't say that YOU think that YOU need to see/listen to "Spelling Bee" more to fully appriciate it. Because you did.
Coming from the perspective of a person with who has seen them both an equal amount of times, I'd still say that "Spelling Bee" is stronger.
"Plus, your view of the show was tainted by outside circumstances... "
It sure was. And whose fault was that? :p
Sueleen, I heard that Nina did her signature song. You know the one. It's the one that people most associate with her.
