Trish- haha that commercial makes me want to see it again! If you don't like so bad it's good shows or if your ideal plans for Saturday night aren't to watch Trog for the 23rd time then maybe you won't take to this show. There's certainly a time and place for stuff like this, and with the right attitude and expectations it can be a lot of fun.

Caught it tonight - several songs could use some trimming and the show needs its pace picked up, but Massey is amazing and the cast is having fun.
Some of Varla's numbers really need to be tightened up - one can only listen to her squeak for so long.
But otherwise, it's good and campy fun. If Charles Busch and The Judds wrote a musical...
Ha, Trog is definitely one to own. Do you know if anyone has ever tried to musicalize it? It could be the next in line of the Evil Dead/Toxic Avenger type musicals. I can envision a tour de force number for Dr. Brockton when she plays the different styles of music for Trog, kind of like a "Babette" type showstopper. In fact a Trog send up would have fit right in with Lucky Guy!

Whizzer,
Interesting the discussion of camp in this thread. The term is hard to define; it's more of the "I know it when I see it variety,"... or is it? Because different people may see different things as campy.
Your mention of Evil Dead/ Toxic Avenger is a case in point. Were they camp? Or were they parodying a genre that was itself campy? And if you're parodying camp, then isn't it a question of gilding the lily? For how can you parody something that is itself self-parody? Maybe that's why I didn't like either of those shows.
It's all very complex.
In any case, I'll be interested in seeing Lucky Guy.

I may or may not have gotten front row seats for the May 15th matinee (aka my birthday) simply for the fact that Jenn Colella is in it and that woman never fails to amaze me. I'm SO glad people are giving it positive praise!

Went this afternoon and enjoyed it more then I thought I would. It is a fun show, with some good music & dancing. And I must say, Dean is H O T, hot!
jbm2, not sure how a 12 year old will take to the show, guess it would depend on his/her sense of humor. It is fast moving and entertaining, and a little bit country, LOL!
Seeing this next week and I'm so excited to FINALLY see Varla Jean!!!
Just came back from the matinee today and I LOVED this show so much. What a fun afternoon. And this is coming from someone who hates country music. What camp.......the Buckeroos were my fav part (along with Kyle,Varla and Leslie) of the show. The dancing, singing, jokes were just plain fun. Do yourself a favor and see it!!!
Jordan- I've now seen it twice and Varla Jean only got better the second time. She is a true talent! I hope you love it as much as I did!

Yes, I think it's fine for a 12 year old. I loved Lucky Guy, too, can't wait to see it again, and many of the double entendres will sail over the heads of younger people. This show is really a fun family show with a camp sensibility. It reminded me in it's lavishness of costume and over-the-top sensibility of the skits they did on the Carol Burnett Show. Plus it's so darn funny and likable and the songs are wonderful! Kyle Dean Massey was so terrific singing the title song, and Savannah Wise was great singing the counter-point, My Lucky Guy at the end. The hilarious Jenn Collela got 2 numbers, Doin' Hair Today in Act I and Find Him and Bring Him Home with Savannah in Act 2. And the formidable Jim Newman was outstanding in a song that seemed to be lifted right out of vaudeville, called Chicky, which he danced with Jenn Collela who plays that role. WOW!! I loved everything about the show, especially the incredibly talented Buckaroos, who are simply amazing singers and dancers as well as gorgeous guys! Varla Jean Merman and Leslie Jordan try and almost manage to steal the show, but there are so many talented people in the cast, that they don't quite succeed. Have a great time at America's Next Favorite Family Musical!
I don't understand why Varla would take a pay cut to do this show. Considering how often she sells out in Provincetown in the Summer and the numerous times she does tours throughout the country, it's a wonder she said "okay" to the puny wages they offer for an Off-Broadway house.
Not to mention how TERRIBLE the commercial looks.
After watching the videos, I REALLY want to see this! Too bad it won't be playing by the time I get to the city. :/

I saw this Friday evening May 13. Pure crap. A show that was written back in the '80's and it felt like it. Jokes that you could see coming a mile away. The most ridiculous story. Almost every song sounded alike. Direction and choreography was amateurish at best. A hard working cast who deserve better. The only plus were the costumes. How this made it to a New York stage is a mystery. The book, music and lyric writer who also directed it must have put up his own money. Who else would?
