Hey Joey,
I saw The Passion Of The Crawford tonight. Count me in with the gang that was hoping for something a bit more hilarious, and in line with her older shows. The fast paced video montage at the top of the show was a bit misleading, as it wreaked of all the over the top films and mannerisms of our heroine.
The majority of this production is the re-creation of the 1973 interview that John Springer had with Crawford at Town Hall. It's a much more subtle performance, but very nuanced to say the least. Scott Wittman (of Wittman/Shaiman "Hairspray") was on tonight playing the Springer role, and matched Lypsinka, lip-sync to lip-sync. It was the celebrity -type interview, with Lypsinka conveying the image-conscience Crawford to a tee. So the first 45 minutes of the show was the sit down between the two of them, and while entertaining, there were a lot of dull moments.
In the last 15 minutes ( the show ran exactly 60 minutes) she did a couple of stand up monologues, followed by her hilarious phone call sketch. We needed so much more of that! " Barbara, please!"
