I saw Leslie Uggams years ago in the touring version of Anything Goes and she was a distinctly underwhelming Reno Sweeney. In fact, if memory serves, I am pretty sure she received tepid reviews in general for that show. Given that Mame requires even more charisma and presence than Reno Sweeney, I cannot see Uggams in the part unless she has dramatically improved over the years. Again, speaking from the Anything Goes experience, she does have a pleasant singing voice, but she was a clunky dancer and hit-or-miss stage presence. To her credit though, she did manage to rise above her horrific co-star Rex Smith, whose singing was so soft as to be barely heard, was also a clunky dancer and re-defined the term "low wattage".
