Posted: 7/15/08 at 5:08pmI saw the 1957 Phoenix Theatre production with Eva LeGallienne and Irene Worth. It was thrilling theatre down on 2nd Avenue and was confirmed to me by the 1958 tour that Ms. LeGallienne headed. I saw the tour while I was stationed in Washington, DC with the Air Force. If anyone enjoys grand, epic theatre you should not miss this rare opportunity.

This is about the first "must-see" I have heard announced for the new season.
I saw it at the Donmar and it is a strong play strongly done. This is the sort of play you could rehearse for a year and still have revelations about.
Do not miss.
Who thought that the director of Mamma Mia had this show so brilliantly up her sleeve as well?
Also there are a lot of scenes and monologues that can be done from this script. The thing is to know the play very well because the psychology is layered and conflicted. Work with a director. Mary Stuart is not for the superficial actor.
Donmar published the script which is a new translation. Maybe if the Drama Book Shop is petitioned enough, they will import a few copies.
