they answered this at a talkback, all the kids auditioned and a lot of the parents didn't love it but the kid they eventually ended up casting, his mother is an actress herself so she totally got it and the kid himself apparently really understood his character and what was going on.

It's funny, all of my friends who have seen the play and I keep asking ourselves, "who let their kid the Party Piece?"
A little swash, a bit of buckle - you'll love it more than bread.

hehehe... I'm not sure his really understanding the character is more comforting.
