Because Riedel is always right. So that makes you right, too!

What does "gossip columnist" mean to you? I don't get why it's so hard to understand that what he writes it warped truth.
A work of art is an invitation to love.

Chanticleer148, is that your blog? If it is, you sound like an idiot.

"Wanna Be A Foster":

You always begin with name calling and have no where to go except down from that already low position.

Have you ever in your life tried to debate something without demeaning your opposition. Just argue the points. It might win you something besides the pity and sympathy of those who read your senseless rants!

Some of these people don't show up for work! Read everyone esle's comments they are just as strong as mine if not more so.

"There should be language in contracts that reduce the star's salary for each missed performance. Then we will see how many perfs are missed in future.
"

Actors are not paid when they miss performances. FYI...

I knew it couldn't be long before the sob-sisters possey showed up to make the requisite excsues for people not showing up for work.

I wasn't aware that you are privy to all actors pay checks. LOL.

Are you too auditioning to moderate this message board? LOL.

And my dear Eve, you are "THE" authority on everything Broadway.

I live in New York City. You live in Ohio. I know a little bit more than you.

From the Actors' Equity Production Contract Rulebook:

34. ILLNESS AND SICK LEAVE.
(A) Illness: Standard Minimum Contracts. Except as provided in (C)
below, if the Actor cannot perform on account of illness, injury (other than an
injury as specified in Rule 35, INJURY: WORKERS' COMPENSATION
INSURANCE), or any other valid reason, then the Actor shall not be entitled
to any salary for the time during which said services shall not for such reason
or reasons be rendered. Should the foregoing condition continue for a period
of 16 performances or more, or for any 24 performances within a period of 48
performances and the Actor has not requested and received Disability Leave
under the provisions of paragraph (I) below, the Actor may terminate the
contract effective immediately or the Producer may terminate the contract
upon one week's notice and in either case, the Producer shall pay for all
47
Rule 34, ILLNESS AND SICK LEAVE
services to date and transportation back to the Point of Organization or Place
of Engagement at the Actor's option.
(B) Illness: Term Contracts. Except as provided in (C) below, if the
Actor cannot perform on account of illness, injury (other than an injury as
specified in Rule 35, INJURY: WORKERS' COMPENSATION INSURANCE),
or any other valid reason, then the Actor shall not be entitled to any salary for
the time during which said services shall not for such reason or reasons be
rendered. If during such illness an Actor other than an Understudy plays the
part and the original Actor has not requested and received Disability Leave
under the provisions of paragraph (I) below, the original Actor shall give two
weeks' notice of the date of Actor's return to the cast together with a doctor's
certificate certifying Actor's ability to act on that date and on Actor's return
shall give, at the Producer's request, three days' free rehearsals.
(1) If the Actor must travel to rejoin the company, the Producer shall
furnish transportation.
(2) Should the illness of the Actor continue or should it appear that it
should necessarily continue for 10 days or more, Equity, at the request of
the Producer, shall have full power to modify or terminate the Actor's
contract on such terms as it may consider just if it shall be satisfied that it
will be necessary for the Producer to employ a successor under a
Standard Term Contract

This appears to be a very intense thread.
"We don't value the lily less for not being made of flint and built to last. Life's bounty is in it's flow, later is too late. Where is the song when it's been sung, the dance when it's been danced? It's only we humans who want to own the future too." - Tom Stoppard, Shipwreck

That's a HUGE assumption, and besides your small posse of whining followers, I doubt anyone esle believes that.

Simply making an assumption that I live in Ohio all year is foolish and infintile.

Also, you simply refuse to engage debate on the issues. This diversionary, middle school technique may work with normal, over-emtionalized hsyterics, but simply can not win an intelligent argument.

It's been a great day, the Post exposed a charade that should not be perpetuated upon the public.

Yes, it's hysterical to cite a rulebook that answers a question up for debate: whether actors are paid when they miss. I apologize for my hysterics. So does the League of American Producers and Actors' Equity Association and every Broadway actor-who's-ever-missed-and-been-docked-pay in the history of unionized theatre.

I also think it's funny that you're trying to set a standard for intelligent debate, while lacking the intelligence to spell correctly. Nthing distroys credability fastre then mis-spelled argumants.

I'm impressed: you attempted to make a point using some alleged facts that you found on the internet.

HOWEVER, unless you are an agent (God Forbid) you are not privy to all of the individually negotiated contract provisions for every actor.

Furthermore, the docking of pay is the central point of any thesis developed by anyone who is on the side of actors showing up for work! It was only one remedy suggested which is more than I hear from excuse makers central.

As I said, we have already declared victory on this moral cause: the public has more information than when we started!

michael riedel: the most powerful man on broadway!! fear him!!

hey everyone, i don't really have the patience to read this entire thread as it already is half past midnight.. but i just wanted to post this. It's a direct quote from Ms. Murphy's Downstage Interview online that i posted on a different thread a while back. I don't think it's fair to bash anyone... a lesson i'm trying to learn. Let's just settle with the fact that we are artists. Lets try to co-exist peacefully.
***************************************************************************

Okay, for those of you who don't want to listen through the WHOLE interview (although is it is very fascinating) this is what she says about her run in Wonderful Town: (Keep in mind that I'm typing "the spoken word" so it may all seem like one big run on sentence, but I don't want to change her words.)

Donna: The was a lot of controversy this year about the fact that I was sick during the coarse of "king and Iā€...oh hello... (Laughing and correcting herself) we didn't get to talk about "king and I"! Of "Wonderful Town" and, it was one of the most heartbreaking experiences I've ever had in my life, because I genuinely got ill during the beginning of the run, and then I got a couple of sinus infections that just wiped me out and it was just a show that I couldn't do...(While I was) not well. The truth is that I did it sick a number of times. But there are some writers out there... who make a living, let's face it, as gossip columnists, and that's their job, you know, and I had never experienced anything like that, and I allowed my self to take it personally for a few minutes. I felt so, first of all, responsible in terms of my company and the show and then and we were approaching award season, one person in particular really was harping on my absences and. It just sort of gave a tone like I was making a choice to not be there. I mean, I was making a choice, to not attend the award ceremony, because I was ill and I was trying to get well enough to get back into the show. So there was an inference that I was a certain kind of "diva" who cared about herself and who didn't care about the work or the show and the irony was that, all I was doing was being at home in bed trying to get well, So that I could be back as strongly as possible. Nobody was as upset as I was.
Howard Sherman: It's an awfully loaded word, (They were talking about the word "diva" before) and I only bring it up because it seems to me, at times, to be used unfairly and at times, just kind of interchangeably with "star".
Donna: Right.
Howard Sherman: But it does have all those different meanings obviously some of what we talked about today, the word for you is "actress".
Donna: Thanks... Thank you.

*************************************************************

...hope this brings some sense of understanding or clarity. goodnight!

"alleged facts"

Go to actorsequity.org and find the Production Contract. Individual actor contracts CANNOT and CAN NEVER contradict or override the Production Contract. And so, you prove to us, Mr. Intelligent President of the Debate team, that you do NOT indeed know the facts.

What's that sound? Oh, a rapidly deflating argument... L.O.L.

michael riedel: the most powerful man on broadway!! fear him!!

You can backpeddle all you want Chanticleer (well, you don't know what her SPECIFIC contract says!) but face it, you can argue debate format and structure all you want, you can write condescendingly as if everybody in the world is one of the teenagers you (God forbid) teach, but it's time you learn a very important real world lesson that I bet a majority of the kids you teach already know. Sometimes life isn't fair and you don't get your way.

If the "major star" you're hoping to see isn't in a show, here's hoping said star's name is above the title. Then you can get your money back.

Otherwise, you pays your money and you takes your chances.

I 'm glad you admit that your only source of information is from the internet which, by the way, works in Ohio as well as NYC. And what's that I hear, the sobbing sound of someone who knows that they aren't an expert after all? LOL.

Secondly, you missed the core of the point, you are still not in a position to know the individual nature of each contract. Even stipulating your point that these actors equity clauses are never-overidden, compensation can come in many forms, and amounts. Your are blithely naiive enough to assume that your darling favorite actors can not afford to miss a show? You honestly believe that they lose something big by not working? PLEASE. LOL.

It isn't about getting anyone's individual way! I have written reviews praising the performance of others! And thank God NO ONE has to be educated by the fool "Finding Namo" (was that a spelling or intellecutual error?) LOL.

All of the sour grapes from the sob sisters is hilarious. Even high school students know you have to show up for work to get paid, and that making a commitment in a show is a team effort, not a star turn. It is also a matter of professional behavior and personal integrity.

So what if we "pay our money and take our chances." This doesn't elminate free speech rights for anyone. And today, the New York Post spoke truth to power!
#145

michael riedel: the most powerful man on broadway!! fear him!!

Furthermore, I'm not worried about getting MY money back. As a professional, I invest my time in making things better for others.

I am so glad that these abhorent behaviors are being exposed for the benefit of others.

Finding Namo (LOL), I realize that in your paradigm of thinking you can't get beyond a budget. I moved well beyond that into artistic concerns many years ago.

Thanks.

You are a condescending, lonely, arrogant, lonely, tiresome, lonely, hypocritical, lonely and desperate blowhard. My Master's Degree in Idiots tells me that you're one of the best case studies to come along in a long, long time. I'm writing my thesis on you. In the meantime, try to find somebody nice to spend an evening with, and don't bring up politics.
#147

michael riedel: the most powerful man on broadway!! fear him!!

You should just realize that sometimes life isn't fair, you don't always get your own way, and move along to writing your rave review of Ann Coulter's "Godless."

Your condescension should serve that perfectly.

LOL

The incessant name calling has become the only discussion technique. WOW. That's marvelous.

Like many others in society today, there are no facts to refute any points, it is simply resort to innuendo and degrading remarks.

And by the way, we have great political discussions too here at the house with the many family members and friends who are around to engage in ADULT discussions.

God Bless The New York Post.
