LOST LACHANZE
By MICHAEL RIEDEL

August 4, 2006 --

On Broadway

A hiker in the Himalayas has a better chance of spotting a snow leopard than a theatergoer at "The Color Purple" has of seeing its Tony-winning star, LaChanze.

The actress, who got glowing reviews for her portrayal of the oppressed girl turned pants-making lesbian, Celie, hasn't given a full week's worth of performances since the awards show in June.

The week after the Tonys, she missed three out of eight performances, and now drops one or two shows a week.

Last week, she began a two-week vacation that came a few weeks after she missed several days' shows to go on "vocal rest."

The reigning absentee queen of Broadway is Donna Murphy, who missed more than a third of the run of "Wonderful Town" two years ago, which not only cost her a Tony but probably wrecked her Broadway career.

LaChanze isn't in her league yet, but she's closing in.

"She's got Donna Murphy syndrome," jokes a Broadway insider. "She needs a Marian-Seldes-Never-Miss-a-Performance vaccination."

Production sources say LaChanze has developed serious throat problems due to the exacting demands of "The Color Purple" score, which is loaded with full-throated, "American Idol"-style power ballads.

Ken Sunshine, her publicist, points out that her role requires her to be onstage from the start of the show to the end. "On the weekends, she is required to do five performances," he says. "That is almost inhuman.

"She does not like to go on unless she can do what people expect of her. Every performance she has done has been dazzling."

Maybe so.

But LaChanze has a history of scaling back the eight-performance workweek. She was out of "Once on This Island" so many times that wags dubbed it "Once in the Show."

When she was in the Lincoln Center musical "Dessa Rose," her understudy, Kenita Miller, performed more often than she did.

Miller is understudying LaChanze in "The Color Purple."

"She loves understudying LaChanze. She knows she'll get to go on," jokes a production insider.

Cast members are sympathetic to LaChanze's plight - she is popular backstage (when she's there) - but they note that hers isn't the only demanding role in the show.

The wonderful Felicia P. Fields, who plays Sofia, has a couple of full-out numbers, plus some very dramatic book scenes.

She hasn't missed a single performance since "The Color Purple" opened.

Theatergoers usually are entitled to a refund or ticket exchange if a star is out of a show.

But that doesn't hold true for "The Color Purple" because LaChanze isn't billed above the title.

In any case, ticket-holders rarely make a fuss when she's out, theater sources say.

LaChanze may be one of Broadway's most talented performers, but she's not the reason people are flocking to "The Color Purple," one of the highest-grossing shows on Broadway.

They go because Oprah, one of its backers, told them to.

Now that is brilliant producing.

PRODUCERS Fran and Barry Weissler are throwing a big bash on Nov. 14 to mark the 10th anniversary of their smash revival of "Chicago."

Members of the original cast - Bebe Neuwirth, Ann Reinking, Joel Grey, James Naughton and Marcia Lewis - will reprise several of their big numbers.

Many celebrities who subsequently appeared in the show also will perform.

Among them: Melanie Griffith, Brooke Shields, John O'Hurley, Paige Davis, Tom Wopat, David Hasselhoff and Marilu Henner.

Patrick Swayze will be there, as well.

Speaking of Swayze, here's some gossip from London:

He was supposed to jump into the hit West End revival of "Guys and Dolls" on July 10, but was reportedly seized by stage fright three days after he began rehearsals.

He vamoosed for a while, and the show's producers put out the word their new Nathan Detroit was suffering from a bad chest cold.

Swayze reappeared a week or so later, watched "Guys and Dolls" from the wings, regained his nerve and is now in the show.

Every time I do it, I swear I'll never do it again til the next time company comes."--"Lulu" from "Can't Stop The Music" ----- "When the right doors didn't open for him, he went through the wrong ones" - "Sweet Bird of Youth" ------------ --------- "Passions" is uncancelled! He better not say anything about Laura Benanti!

I am not bashing Laura, because she is a fantastic performer, but I have seen Tina more times than Laura as Julia.

Celie is a large role, but is it vocally taxing? I was surprised by how little the character sang. "I'm Here" seems like the only big vocal number. It's not like singing Effie eight times a week.

i saw lachanze in the show and was really disappointed. she didn´t sound the way she does on the cd at all (for example she didn´t hit any of the high notes in "what about love"). she was replaced by kenita miller for act 2. obviously, she was ill. i think she should stay off completely if she feels like she can´t handle it. replacing the lead in a show like this during the performance is like its death!!!

I guess she didn't have an attendance problem when she was in Ragtime, because he didn't even mention that show.

re: MICHAEL RIEDEL : LOST LACHANZE She's got Donna Murphy syndrome

Michael Riedel makes me sick...he can't even get his facts straight. During the run of "Dessa Rose," it was announced that La Chanze needed major abdominal surgery. I don't think anyone would be so inhumane as to ask a performer to perform under those conditions.

As for calling it Donna Murphy syndrome, I think it would be more correct to call it Nathan Lane, Patti LuPone, or Gwen Verdon syndrome.

How so?

With regards to Patti LuPone where does that come from? Her attendance in Sweeney has been excellent.

As for Nathan Lane, we were told he develped vocal problems.

The problem with Donna Murphy is that to this day, the public still has not been given ANY explanation for her absences.

re: MICHAEL RIEDEL : LOST LACHANZE She's got Donna Murphy syndrome

Up until her run in "Sweeney Todd," Patti LuPone had a poor attendance record. In "Evita" and "Noises Off" she REFUSED to perform 8 shows a week in addition to missing performances. When I purchased tickets for "Sweeney" last month, the guy at the box office said that Patti had been "good" during this run, having only 4 unscheduled absences.

Have you ever noticed that Nathan Lane misses a ton of performances in EVERY show he does? And during his West End run with "The Producers" he slipped a disc, and in less than a month, was shooting "The Producers" film. Considering his history, I cannot believe his excuses.

Donna Murphy has been in this business for nearly 30 years. Until "Wonderful Town," she had an impeccable attendance record. During her run with the show, there were explanations...she got the flu, she had sinus infections, etc....she ran into some bad luck with her health. I don't believe the public is entitled to any more than those explanations...the woman deserves some privacy. I am choosing to believe Murphy's reasons for absence, considering that she has been, and will continue to be, the epitome of professionalism. I think LuPone and Lane could learn a lot from her.

How quickly everyone forgets that Sara Ramirez was accused of missing many shows.

I don't think Nathan or Patti have missed all that many shows---at least not a third of the run....

Riedel is just stirring up trouble!

re: MICHAEL RIEDEL : LOST LACHANZE She's got Donna Murphy syndrome

The reason she has vocal problems is because she isnt singing properly...never has. I truly like her as a performer, but never heard a show where the singing seemed like it hurt the actor's voices like TCP.

Patti did not have the clout to "demand" anything in Evita. Even the prior London production had a matinee Eva....and that is a VERY demanding role.

Deciding that Donna's medical excuses are more valid than Lane's makes no sense. However, I dont dispute that you are entitled to believe whatever you like, RuthSherwood...I am wondering, though, where you got your information.

No, Riedel, you probably wrecked her career by making a bigger deal of it than it should have been.

I can't stand this guy.

re: MICHAEL RIEDEL : LOST LACHANZE She's got Donna Murphy syndrome

I got my information about LuPone during her runs in "Evita" and "Noises Off" by actually BEING there. I was told, when I purchased my tickets, that she did not perform matinees...she DEMANDED not to perform matinees during her run in "Noises Off."

I am choosing not to believe Lane because he is consistently out of all of his shows. Murphy has not been consistently out of her shows...the only time she has had attendance issues is with "Wonderful Town." Murphy's only attendance issues were with one show...Lane's attendance problems have been with all of his shows.

Maybe the guy at the box office got it wrong, but I was told that LuPone would not play matinees. I saw a matinee of "Noises Off" and she wasn't there.

- I firmly believe that no one can wreck anyone's career. Donna is more than qualified to make a comeback if she so desired and I have no doubt it would be a success. Talent always rises above gossip!

re: MICHAEL RIEDEL : LOST LACHANZE She's got Donna Murphy syndrome

I don't think that's true, at all, Gypsy. He goes in for the gossip and then he amplifies the fact and makes it a personal attack. I think he has the power to do a lot of damage to a reputation. Look at how many people immediately harp on the absences when someone brings up Donna Murphy, just on this board alone. I don't know that the powers that be are exactly immune to noting that reputation

Not sure the "guy at the box office" is the best source of an actors negotiations! :)
I saw Noises Off on two afternoon performances with the whole cast.
I've seen the Color Purple 3x, never with La Chanze. I hope she is ok!
